The association is always the occasional colorful holiday and keeping traditions alive and that stuff, but beyond just being nice, it's useful.

Knowing a location, where it's safe, where the food and supplies are both good and cheap, the informal shibboleths that differentiate you from "outsiders" that allow for information, assistance, even favors from otherwise total strangers. Beyond locale, you might've inherited self defense practices, a widely applicable trade, a way to sustain yourself in unusual situations. Those things are held together by those seemingly arbitrary parades and obligatory events. I haven't been appreciative enough.

Culture in and of itself has a lot of merit. People that want to do away with said culture are usually miserable people looking to make everyone else miserable too

Those are the advantages of spending a vacation in your own country.

I missed my abuela, so I went on a really long walk to the city where she lived.

Eh, depends. You could just be autistic/OCD with touch issues, in a culture where greeting is all hugs and kisses on both cheeks with otherwise perfect strangers. That's not me, mostly I just hated dressing up for church :v

And then there's the aunt who's always shocked at how tall you've grown since she last saw you -- when you were 8. It's as if they don't expect you to keep growing after that age.

I hated that person
then i became that person
I did this to my youngest cousin, who gave me the eyeroll, and I felt the Cosmic Cycle of Aging mock me from on high. "You cannot escape," It said. "There is nowhere else to go."

We are all doomed to sound like our parents in the end. Each generation passes to the other the curse of saying dumb stuff at inappropriate times like an inherited genetic defect.

Octopuses age rapidly after reproducing, so that they die and avoid contesting their offspring for food sources. Maybe we do something similar.

If they were so worried about cultural heritage you'd think they'd institute Odin's Day or something, he's been around since the BCs lol and Black Pete is like what, 1800s?

I don't think the Netherlands has a strong association with Norse culture, and it's sad that they feel a strong cultural connection to racist caricatures from two centuries ago...

It's a shared Germanic culture, all believed in the same gods but each language ofc had slightly different names. i.e. Woden in English, Wuotan in continental, Woaz in Gothic, inn blah blah blah. The area did have a lot of Celts tho too.

But yea tbh these days the only ones that do is the frozen north and nationalists, but it still makes more sense.
