https://gamingbolt.com/tekken-8-is-being-blasted-by-steam-user-reviews-following-battle-pass-introduction

Tekken 8 started off strong with widespread critical acclaim and impressive sales right out the gate, but Bandai Namcos post-launch monetization approach for the fighter has irked a fair few in its player base. The companys decision to add an in-game microtransactions store a few weeks after release was met with significant backlash, and the recent decision to introduce a battle pass has provoked a similar reaction.

On the platform, the games recent reviews show a Mixed rating, with 40 percent of over 3,100 reviews in the last 30 days being negative. Unsurprisingly, the majority of negative user reviews for the game call out its in-game microtransactions store and newly-introduced battle pass, with several also pointing out that the base game cost $70 to begin with.

A little over a month ago, in the immediate aftermath of the announcement that Tekken 8 was adding an in-game store, director Katsuro Harada defended Bandai Namcos decision to do so, citing rapidly increasing development costs, with Tekken 8 apparently having cost nearly thrice as much as its predecessor, and stating that consistent post-launch support for the game requires yet more investments.

Narrative's gone from no preordering games to not buying games at launch and now don't buy video game within 6-12 months of release...

also Tekken 7 had like over $150 worth of fighter pack DLCs and shit so not sure why people are surprised Bamco wasn't going to implement microtransactions, not that I'm excusing that type of scum fuckery.

It's kind of crazy how the big 3 fighting games (SF6, T8, and MK1) all have in some form of way predatory practices when it comes to their DLC. Most of it being being over priced garbage (TMNT $15 avatar costume, to MK charging $10's for a Fatality) and the battle passes having garbage as its prizes like Tekken. If the fighting game genre wants to survive, they're going to have to change the way they monetize stuff because many of us are sick and tired of being nickle and dimed like this. Multiversus had the right idea, but maybe the F2P route will be better if they want the fighting game genre to go into this direction.

All this would probably have gone over a lot better if the cash shop and the battle pass didn't contain accessories that used to be free in Tekken 7.

I fully expect project L (sorry.... 2xko) to come out, to be free to play, and to have a monetization scheme very similar to League of Legends. I also expect it to make an obscene amount of money and finally demonstrate to the big three that you can have a successful fighting game with a box price, or successful fighting game that's free to play with monetization, but they're trying to do both will bite you in the ass.

Yeah, I used to love Fighting games, but the way they've become has mostly caused me to stay away from them now. Although I am tempted to buy Tekken 8 because Azucena looks fun as hell

If you're not looking to play the game a lot online, get it when it's on sale because I still think the gameplay as a whole is a lot of fun and good.

They need to change the name of that game to something else or back to "Project L", because "2XKO" sounds like a chore to say, but maybe it will grow on me. But yeah I can see that game being a game changer in the genre if it's successful (and it most likely will be because Riot Games actually take their time into making their games good). I don't enjoy LoL or Valorant all that much, but even I'm not going to deny that both games are massive hits.

Well seriously speaking devs keep making predatory mtx because people keep buying them. Vote with your wallet.

Arcade Quest is a fair compromise for a single player mode but not quite on the same level as Soul Calibur 2's Weapon Master mode imo.

Guilty Gear continues to avoid all these MTX issues. Although I'll note that I don't consider season passes part of that because before those Capcom would just re-release the game at full price each year with like 2 new characters, so being able to buy a fighter once at full price and then pay the equivalent of half a game each year for 4 new characters is actually an improvement from historical practices.

Yeah I'm aware of Capcom's practice. Just like SF, GG too had similar updates during PS2-era. Sadly the latest GG Strive suffers from nickel and diming although your mileage may vary. Compare Strive to its predecessor, Xrd Rev 2.

Xrd Rev 2 (25 chars)
1.) Base game (Revelator): 21 chars
2.) Revelator DLC: 2 dlc, 2 chars (Dizzy, Kum Haehyun)
3.) Upgrade Revelator to Rev 2: free 2 chars (Answer, Baiken)

Strive (27 chars so far)
1.) Base : 15 chars
2.) Season Pass 1: 5 chars
3.) Season Pass 2: 4 chars
4.) Season Pass 3: 3 chars

Conclusion :
For Xrd Rev 2, add 3 piecemeal DLCs for complete rooster.
For Strive, add 3 season passes or 12 piecemeal DLCs for complete rooster.

Guilty Gear has fallen prey to mtx >.<
