I'd have 2 nickels. But it's weird that it happened twice.

Rikku - ff 10

Riku - kh 1

and

Terra - ff 6

Terra - kh bbs

Maybe it's just a kingdom hearts thing that they're piggybacking off of final fantasy.

You'd have several nickels for Biggs, Wedge, Cid, and Mog alone.

When you have so many games, each with several new characters, theres bound to be some overlap.

Same thing happens with Fire Emblem. Theyve reused names a few times, because with 14 unique games times roughly 50 characters each, thats about 700 characters. Hard to come up that many unique names that are easy to pronounce.

#2 mentioned those recurring names, but for Terra: the FF6 character was named Tina in the JP version, so that wasn't a reuse for their original decision. During translation, they decided Tina wasn't exotic enough and changed it to Terra. Then KH didn't bother to change the translation of the (not reused in JP) Terra name.

I wonder why they never reused the names Rosso the Crimson and Azul the Cerulean. Those names were soooooo fucking cool.

A sarcasm tag is simply not sufficient to express the total sardonic disdain I have over this.

Cid is a great name tho

I attribute my never liking Kingdom Hearts to it having an inferior Rikku.

Heck even in the 1st example, technically the Japanese version of the name is closer to yuku than it is rikku, which is different than the kh riku.

It's too similar phonetically to Toy Story's Sid though, who used to mistreat his toy soldiers. The toys were later destroyed.

I believe there's a rule that if you have a copyright or registered trademark on a name, you have to use it periodically or else lose your claim on it.

I still don't know what this is but based on post above it I'm assuming fire emblem reference? Fire is usually red or crimson

Technically Square didn't re-use Terra. In the original Japanese version, she was named Tina.
Nintendo of America decided to give her a more "exotic/mysterious" name, since they didn't give a shit about accurate translations back then.

They're villains from Dirge of Cerberus, aka the Vincent-centric FF7 sequel / spinoff that everyone wishes they could forget. I could look past the banality of some writer patting themselves on the back for essentially naming two characters 'Red the Red' and 'Blue the Blue' if they were otherwise interesting or well-written. Spoiler: they aren't.
