is this really intended? Its very easy to avoid most enemies, the ones you cant avoid, you can just ignore since you just need to beat them. This lets you explore very far away quite easily.

with this I was able to get enough materials to upgrade every town, along with enough gems to hire the angel I think fairly early? (I havent rescued scarlet yet), and I did 4 treasure maps for some decent loot

Also is there a point to recruitable generic NPCs? I guess I can bolster a unit with a specific type of soldier if I need to, but Id rather use named characters if I can and Ive been doing fine for the most part with those

Yes. It's based on ogre battle where the world map is little more than destinations you pick out. They made it more spiffy by letting you actually see things in it.

You will need to recruit a minimum of 56 generic units + recruit every single non generic unit in order to staff every settlement with a guard. Guards collect taxes after every battle and it adds up very fast.

The units in the starting county & drakenhold are cheaper than elsewhere. I recommend recruiting from there as needed.

You also need to recruit generics if you want to use more than one of most of the classes. In addition you don't have to use a mirror in order to have the best stat combinations (or even passable ones, as some of the characters have insanely bad ones.

NGL it's kinda whack Chloe is literally the only non generic soldier character in the game

Ye, it's really bizarre what classes you get multiples of versus the ones that there is only a single one of.
