how come pit bulls are allowed to be kept as pets by just about anyone, but I need a permit to get a mountain lion which are actually less dangerous than pit bulls

there have been 28 humans killed by mountain lions since the 1850s

contrast that with pit bulls, who killed 300 humans between 2005 and 2017

meaning, PER YEAR, pit bulls kill the same number of humans that mountain lions (again, need a permit), have killed in over 170 years.

this aggression will not stand, man.
Not disagreeing with the sentiment about the dangers of pitbulls (or potential danger), but this is bad statistics. You'd have to calculate it on a death-to-encounter ratio, in which case it'd make the mountain lion number skyrocket, since encounters with them and humans are rare, while humans to pitbulls are extremely common.

Depends on what you mean. Most dogs breeds are due to human breeding, so quite literally eugenics.

Technically speaking eugenics only applies to humans. With other animals it's not considered eugenics but rather selective breeding.

In practice it's pretty much the exact same thing, the only reason we have a different word for it with humans is because people like to think we aren't animals.

For the billionth time, eugenics only applies to human populations. By definition it literally cannot apply to dogs.

This is true, but this topic has a lot of pearl clutching over the term. But yes, it is just selective breeding, and yes, it's how like 99% of all dog breeds came to be.

I don't think that should be the case. Dogs do have feelings and it's up to us to do right by them. Blatantly talking about killing off a species is not doing right by them.

Depending on the reason for allowing a breed (not species) to die off, it absolutely can be. And that has nothing to do with the definition of eugenics only applying to humans.

Do what you have to do to save your pet, it doesn't change the fact that cats are prey animals to dogs. Most are going to have a go at them, especially if they're a terrier or working breed with high prey drive, that's a simple fact.

I don't have a problem with controlling my dog, because they don't run around loose.

The fact that cats are small and run away which in turns triggers a dog's prey drive. Feral dogs and wild canids like coyotes and foxes will definitely take out a cat and eat it.

Using this same logic a small child is a prey animal to a dog, problem is that only seems to really apply to Pitbulls.

All dogs are predators, that's why all dog/child interactions should be supervised by an adult. The smells, shrieking sounds that kids make, especially the running can trigger a dog with a high prey drive. That's why people should be knowledgeable about what breed that they have, and not be surprised when an Australian Cattle Dog nips at kids trying to herd them.

Also, animal aggression =/= human aggression, just because a dog will attack another dog, cat or other animal it does not mean that it will turn that around on a human.

I've had so many dogs over the years and the only one who showed any aggression to cats was a dog that was trained by the previous owner to chase cats.

Train your dogs better mate.

Boy, some of y'all are dramatic. It's a cat, cats are prey animals to dogs, a lot of dogs have an on sight policy with cats. Also, I'm sick of every bull breed mutts being called Pit Bulls.
Ive owned many different breeds of medium/large dogs and literally none of them have tried to attack any of my cats through the years. They bond very quickly with them. If your dog is straight up trying to run over and murder every cat they see its because of bad owners.

Once again, there's varying levels of aggression, not all dogs will attack other animals on sight, especially if they grew up with them.

There are many factors that go into this, prey drive being the biggest among them. Don't get a Jack Russell or a Westie and act shocked when it reacts to a pet rabbit or guinea pig. It's the owner's responsibility to recognize this and redirect the behavior.

Thats actually not true. Each dog is an individual and some dogs just dont like other animals/dogs. Training them wont get them to like other animals either. The point of the training is to get them to where there wouldnt be violence or you can control them in stressful situations.

My dog HATES other dogs but with years of training her as a puppy and an adult she will sit and stay as other dogs pass but i wouldnt leave her around other dogs unsupervised. Dogs are pack animals and my dads Golden Retreiver loved my step moms rabbit that would jump around the house but would kills birds and squirrels in the backyard because that was when his prey drive would kick in.

I've always owned hounds and hunting dogs. They chase things that look like prey. I don't think they would eat a car to get to it though.

You have to watch hounds on the lose for this reason. Hounds are also very easy going and personable dogs though with people and other dogs due to their hunting heritage.
