If you watch nothing else, watch episode three. It's pretty standalone.

I think the story translates fine, the only major issue with it is that you don't get quite the same connection because you're not placed directly in Joel's shoes and don't spend fifteen hours with Ellie.

a couple of my favorite things about the show's first episode, when compared to the game, is how you get the interview with two scientists in the beginning.

and the focus on Sarah, and her day, before everything sets off.

I overall prefer the game, but those parts (and episode 3) are better handled than in the game.

IMO.
