Mel Gibson's Payback is a remake of Lee Marvin's Point Blank, and Payback is considered by some to the be the better one (I'm on the fence, since I liked both in their own ways). There's a lot of other modern classics that are remakes of older-gen movies (though I can't think of any more off the top of my head since I haven't thought about the subject in years).
