Twenty thousand elephants for Germany, this is not a joke, Masisi said.

Masisi told Bild that Germanys Green party could learn to cohabitate with elephants without hunting them.
It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana. We are paying the price for preserving these animals for the world and even for Lemkes party, Masisi said.
Germans should try to live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to, he added.

To tackle the countrys overpopulation of the animals, Botswana has already offered 8,000 elephants to Angola and another 500 to Mozambique, Masisi said, adding that Mozambique had yet to collect the elephants.
We would like to offer such a gift to Germany, Masisi told Bild, adding that he would not take no for an answer.

Botswana has something like 180,000, they have the most elephants of any nation by far and are looking to actually cull the population through legal hunting because of how many they have.

I hope they dont have to resort to culling the herd. I dunno if other countries taking them is the best option but surely its better than hunting right? Maybe 180k is a lot for them but its still a low amount in the grand scheme of things I think

When I went to Zimbabwe and Zhaire in like 2002 our guides were telling us they also worked for the government and would regularly go out by helicopter to cull thousands of elephants because they were overpopulated like deer are here and would eat everything and starve themselves out.

They then cut the ivory and burned it in massive bonfires to stop it from being collected and sold on the market since that was illegal.

After watching all the nature shows here about how endangered they were it kinda made me wonder wtf was going on.

*not thousands in one trip, at most like a hundred or so iirc but it was something they regularly did during the year
