Fire Emblem was released in Japan in 1990 and considered the template for SRPGs though there have been some prototypes on the PC during the 80s. Anyways, what was the first one that was released overseas?

Wasn't Dune 2 the first RTS game?

(Checks) Nah, but it did codify the genre.

I'm assuming it's not FFT right? That would be too easy. My first exposure to the genre was Front Mission 3, but that release after FFT.

Wouldn't it be one of those Romance of the Three Kingdoms style games for PC or NES?

I have to say also, even though this isnt the answer I loved turn based strategy games in the 80s and into the 1990s when they hit NES.

Stuff like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nobunagas Ambition, and my favorite of the bunch Genghis Khan. I put so much time into these turn based strategy games. I lived and breathed Genghis Khan on NES in 1990. So good. I just like to mention it when I can.

Japanese SRPG? I think it was Langrisser, released as Warsong (US/1991). This is assuming you want Fire Emblem-style games. Otherwise Nobunaga's Ambition (1988), Gengis Khan (1988) or RotK (1989) like archizzy said.

Technically you could include the Ultima games, especially when you get to Ultima 3 and you have a party that moves in turns with field positioning being of huge importance.

Here's a great video on the development and mechanics of Ultima 3

...and that was 1983

pool of radiance was 1988 and is probably the most fully featured "first" SRPG in how people think of them today.

Really though position of your character on screen has been a thing since Temple of Apshai in 1979 if that's all you're counting.
