by work. she says i look like death every day. i dont sound good on the phone either. she asked why its affecting me so much. i told her that having to come in and get yelled at on phones all day, not being able to fight back, while being expected to do more and more as more people are laid off, isnt exactly inspiring stuff

then she confided in me she takes benzos to manage and im like. sure. thats one option.

legit cannot believe my life man. 31, living at home, no savings, soul crushing job

its pretty shitty

Wow. It's like looking in a mirror of my past.

I was just like you, tc. Clinically depressed, living at home, late 20s, no hope for the future.

I reached a breaking point after having to be committed to the worst psychiatric ward in existence. I finally was put on meds and turned things around after that.

My mom found a good opportunity for me in trade school. I'm now about 3 years into it and I'm loving it.

Stay strong. Get help.

Psych wards are bad Ive heard but my one was so boring and stress free that it did the opposite to me and stressed me cos I was so bored of how perfect it was (keep in mind I was under 18 then so it could be different idk.) the others there were mostly women who either were extremely quiet like me or were telling weird jokes a lot and the few men that were there seemed more far gone than I comfortably liked mentally. But it was just so terribly uninteresting. The staff were kinda ignorant or seldom made conversation and its better than anything bad I guess. I hear people say psych wards are really bad but the only specifications I get are people saying rude staff but they dont explain how they were rude.

Are you also helping your parents financially too? Not to sound crass but if you have been living at home this many years I dont see how you can work a full time job and not have savings. Even if you were working at McDonalds you should be able to save up some good money while living at home unless you are home because you are supporting your parents which I would totally understand. I know some people who do that.

Obviously it sucks and you have talked before how soul crushing it is but at least you only have to do it until later in the year. Once you move with your partner things should change for the better unless you cant get over the mental hurdle of living better that you have also talked about openly.

I hope you can accept things getting better for you and enjoy your change in living situation and work situation later this year.

no. my dad makes a lot of money, he charged me rent for a long time but not for years

before i was 18 my parents demanded i go to college following high school, despite having no dreams or desires of my own. and despite not being college material. they told me it was either college or the streets. they did not help with costs and demanded i get loans.

so i went several dozen thousands of dollars into debt for school, school which i struggled for 6 years to pass, before ultimately failing out for good, because as i told them i am not smart enough nor driven enough for college.

i then moved to texas on my own.

after my job transferred me to texas, they closed the branch i ended up in after less than a year. i came back. moving twice in short term was expensive. coming back i had to part with most of my belongings because i straight up could not afford to move them. since then i have had lots of bills and lots of medical expenses that are completely necessary

i shouldnt have mentioned the savings thing, someone well off always comes in stupefied that someone might be bad with money and might have had a lot of bad luck

often times software, but not necessarily; its just testing some product for quality

lots of positions dont require degreesfor software QA they might want some kind of certification

but its more active/stimulating work without having to deal with customers all the time

so like I used to work at a company that made fitness equipment and the QA people would run the software, do manual testing on the equipment (using it) or write scripts to automate certain things (starting a workout and letting it run for some set amount of time), and note down tests that passed, note down problems and how to recreate them, etc

its a good field to be in with a lot of room for growth as well as on-the-job learning

the only thing I would say is dont get discouraged. It will be harder without a degree but you could maybe leverage some of your schooling or experience in what you do now to find something. Basically every company that puts out a product or software that people use needs quality assurance/testing, so there are a lot of ways to get your foot in the door

even if its still an insurance company, they probably have a QA team. You could look at what skills you might need and look at online courses/tutorials, and work with recruiters to find something that could fit your needs

it took me like three years of on and off searching to switch from my previous field (field service) to what I do now (software dev), and I say that not to say its necessarily going to take a long time but that if you keep at it you can find something better

im not discouraged, im grateful for the direction

i have no doubt i can leverage my experience, i just feel better about that if i can do it in an interview specifically
