I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Grass once again brought us back to lower votals as people didn't seem all that inspired by the typing. Unlike Fire, where the obvious blowout still saw a strong runner up, Grass' winner (Gen III) managed to triple the tied second-place finishers (I & V). It's rough, and that's another typing that's at risk of missing out on a secondary wild card berth, I'd say.

For today's contest, we're doing Ground-types. Despite being a major attack typing, Ground always feels like kind of a background type compared to some of its flashier counterparts. Let's see if the voters feel differently. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Fire: Gen I (30 Votes, 47.62%)
Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
Dragon Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)
Grass: Gen III (28 Votes, 45.90%)
Fairy: Gen VII (24 Votes, 39.34%)
Electric: Gen I (24 Votes, 37.50%)
Flying: Gen I (21 Votes, 35.00%)
Dark: Gen II (18 Votes, 26.87%)
Fighting: Gen IV (14 Votes, 21.88%)
Ghost: Gen V (13 Votes, 17.81%)

(Dark: Gen IX - 17 Votes, 25.37%)

Gen II (I don't care very much for the Wooper line, I think the Swinub line is missing its best member, and I think the Larvitar line is missing ITS best member. Donphan can't save this, especially when it got a glow-up in Gen IX.)

Gen IX (Great Tusk is the only Pokemon in this group that I really and truly LOVE...and that's unfortunate.)

Gen IV (This has Garchomp and Gible, and Mamoswine. I have a higher opinion of Rhyperior than most, but that trio at the start of the list is ROUGH for my favoritism.)

Gen VIII (It sucks that the central figure of this generation is SO basic, because I like Runerigus and Ursaluna, and G-Stunfisk is superior to the original. It's just hard to give a pass to Silicobra and Sandaconda though, and I'm not THAT inspired by the stuff I like here.)

Gen III (Flygon boosts this generation heavily, and Camerupt/Numel/Vibrava help...but I can't deny that the Barboach and Baltoy lines are MASSIVE disappointments, and Nincada is especially bad on top of them.)

Gen VI (There's really nothing BAD here, but it's hard to heap praise on a roster that has a single legendary and half of an evolution line as the only need Ground-types that aren't megas.)

Gen VII (Nothing bad, but nothing amazing either. Just a trio of solid, average lines.)

Gen V (Excadrill's line and Krookodile's line are both SUPER solid, and Golurk's line isn't terrible. Sure, Stunfisk andthe Palpitoad duo are bad, but the good are able to reasonably outweigh the bad here.)

Gen I (I hate to be a genwunner whenever I do it...but this has so many quality Pokemon, and that early collection of the Sandshrew line, plus Nidoqueen/Nidoking is solid as hell. Throw in Cubone/Marowak, the cuteness of Diglett/Dugtrio, and the trio of Rock-types, and it's hard to beat Gen I here.)

Gen 3 is probably the most consistent. Marshtomp, Swampert, Numel, Camerupt, Flygon, and Groudon are all great, and a few others have some novelty factor. Gen 1's lineup is really good too; it just needed a bit more oomph at the top.

Entire Sandile line and Excadrill, with some Golurk on the side is pretty compelling for Gen V.

I will be in the minority for this, but Gen VI is actually very competitive for me because I love Zygarde and Diggersby, and M-Steelix is also really cool.

Clodsire, Toedscruel, and Great Tusk are all great for IX, and the other Paradoxes are neat too.

I has Nidoking and Cubone at the top, with Onix, Marowak, and Sandshrew to a lesser degree, but I don't like that group enough to rank this gen higher.

Gliscor, Torterra, and Mamoswine keep IV in the race.

Camerupt and Flygon are good, but not enough by themselves to save III.

Ditto for Ursaluna and Runerigus in VIII.

II is lagging behind with only Gligar, and I guess Steelix maybe.

But VII is at the bottom with nothing good.

Yeah I dunno, at the last second I think I flip and go: VI > V > IX > I > IV > III > VIII > II > VII

I will probably be the sole vote for VI, lol.

Extremely close between all of gens 1-5 but I had to go with gen 1 because it has my all-time favorite Pokmon.

Voted for Gen 5 here, but I think I shoulda gone 4. Everything except Wormadam is great. Don't see what's good about the Gen 1 grounds, the Sandshrew and Rhydon lines are cool but the others aren't anything special. Gen 9 is also very solid.

Voted Gen 3 for Swampert and Flygon, two of my top 10, alone.

4 and 5 are runners-up.

It was between Gen I and Gen V for me but Landorus and Palpitoad/Seismitoad kinda brought the latter down for me.

man this one's tough

Cubone/Marowak and Sandshrew/Sandslash are some of my favorite lines, regardless of type

meanwhile Camerupt is a favorite in both fire and ground and Groundon may be my overall favorite legendary

ultimately I went gen 1 but it's so close

HM to Gen 2 for Phanpy/Donphan and Swinub and Gen 4 for Mamoswine (I completely forgot that Mamoswine came out two generations later, it feels much more natural than most separated lines

gen 2 was honestly close enough here that if it'd had ttar i'd have probably flipped (not saying it doesn't more than suit its rock/dark typing)

but yeah gen 4 got my vote barely here. every gen this time is solid (pun semi-intended)

my favourites in each one are probably...

GEN 1: Sandshrew (least favourite is probably Graveler or Marowak which is a real testament to how incredibly consistent gen 1 is with its ground lineup)
GEN 2: Donphan (lowest being... Gligar? i guess???)
GEN 3: Nincada (lowest being Whiscash i suppose, which is the only gen 3 line i don't like)
GEN 4: Rhyperior (lowest being... uhhh.... Gabite, sure.)
GEN 5: Krookodile (honestly i don't like any of gen 5's set here besides this line, bottom prob still Lando)
GEN 6: Primal Groudon (boring answer I know, anyway bottom is Diggersby, also boring answer I know)
GEN 7: Palossand (least favourite A-Dugtrio)
GEN 8: Runerigus (bottom G-Stunfisk mostly just because I already didn't like base Stunfisk and i don't consider this one any improvement. It barely even makes sense to be called Stunfisk without electric...)
GEN 9: Ting Lu (honestly idk what the lowest to me here is, i don't really like the others but also don't have strong feelings either. Maybe just paldean wooper tbh)

by the way since i already mentioned yesterday that i factually liked mamoswine i will throw in an extra thing i like about the swine line that i feel a lot of people know but others surely overlook

probably the main reason it has oblivious is because it should be extinct lol

Ground is another one of my favorite types, and the first one I went to when it came to building a themed gym team back around gen 5 (Mamoswine, Dugtrio, Stunfisk, Camerupt, Claydol, Excadrill.) I learned pretty that their speed back then was nearly universally a dumpster fire, with the two exceptions (Dugtrio and Excadrill) both being on my team.

I dont get the genwun love here though, since almost everything was either saddled with a rock type or mono, and tbh, I prefer A-Marowak to the vanilla.

...maybe its because Diggersby was a tragedy and sullied the style by comparison for generations to come.

Nidoking/Nidoqueen alone are awesome, and they're a type combo that wasn't seen again until Gen IX.

9. Gen VI - easiest last place yet. You have one regular Ground type and it's awful. Then there are a bunch of Megas I don't care for and a meh legendary that I actually thought was part of Gen VII! Mega Steelix is kind of decent but I don't really like any of these.

8. Gen VIII - Ursaluna is good, but after that... yikes. Runerigus is terrible and has a really dumb evolution method and Galarian Stunfisk... no thanks. The snakes aren't bad but not my taste.

7. Gen VII - Not the deepest roster here, but I like the sand castles and the Diglett line with hair is a funny meme at least. The horses aren't my favorite but they aren't actively bad.

6. Gen II - There's a lot of good here, but the problem is basically everything has been improved on since. Quagisre? Give me Closdire. Gligar? Great, but Gliscor is better. Piloswine? Mamoswine for the win. Donphan? Great Tusk clears. Even the Larvitar line falls into this, because Tyranitar loses the ground typing.

5. Gen IX - Clodsire and Toedscruel are fantastic, and Bloodmoon Ursaluna is imo an improvement. These aren't my favorite group of paradox Pokemon, and probably my least favorite of the treasures of ruin, but nothing I dislike here.

4. Gen V - Excadrill and Krookodile deserve better, but they're dragged down by Stunfisk and Landorus. I like Golurk and don't like Seisitoad much.

3. Gen III - While I'd probably take my top two from Gen V over Whishcash and Flygon, there's nothing really bad here. Everything else is pretty okay, and I even kind of like the Numel line.

2. Gen I - Sandslash, Nidoking, and Marowak are excellent, Dugtrio, Rhydon, and Golem are good, and Onix is kind of there. Aside from Graveler, who I've never liked, there are no real duds here.

1. Gen IV - Garchomp, Hippowdon, and Gliscor might just be my top 3 Ground types, and sometimes I feel like I like Gible even more than Garchomp, so it would be hard for any generation to top this one. I also like Torterra and Mamoswine a lot, and Gastrdon isn't bad. Rhyperior sucks but not hard enough to knock this stacked lineup out of the top spot.
