This. I've given up on waiting in the one lane while others speed up to merge in to the front. The more people that do it, the more cars that have to fit in ahead of me, so it doesn't make sense to go early when we can all just fill both lanes and zipper merge.

Same. The people in front usually don't know how to merge or like Mabus are scared someone will shoot them and let 3 cars go ahead of them.
It is sad but without proper education nothing you can do. Most people have nigh 0 awareness to how their actions impact traffic or don't care.

Free flowing traffic, merge when clear.
Congestion, zipper at the merge point.

They really should make it part of the driver examination.
In my state teaching that would contradict the law. The merging lane must yeild to the through lane. Pretty sure most states are the same. A few weird ones state neither have right away.

Do you mind saying what state, because a quick look didn't turn up any states where what you said is true, but I only looked at 5 states quickly.

He could also be talking about the people who see "lane merge, 1 mile" or similar notices for construction, where people don't try merge ahead of time and race right up to the bottleneck making everyone's commute longer as they jam up the line.

this is what you're supposed to do. it's called zipper merging

It cheeses me off. I regular commute around the DC nova beltway.

It is like, didn't any of you go to school and learn about how lines work? It is unacceptable to do line skips and cuts on foot so why would it be ok with a giant metal box with controlled explosions under the hood?

It also promotes cheating and bad behavior at large. Cheats get ahead and the rule followers get burnt. So, it actually disincentivises following the rules. This in turn makes driving more unpredictable and unsafe at large.

I drive way faster and risky since living in this area a while since doing the opposite actually seems more unsafe. Cut in line or be cut in line. Total failure of the social contract.

I am not counting zipper merges. Not a fan but those are legit driving techniques when properly done.

Are people really speeding through construction zones? Like you're supposed to be slowing down enough regardless that letting someone merge in front should be no issue...

This is fair when you have little to no traffic. Or really congested traffic.

When you get to normal traffic levels, though, you should be looking to merge ASAP so that you don't get to the end and have to stop. People failing to do this are a large contributor to how you get to the really congested stage.
Merging immediately creates jams.

Zipper merging is what you're supposed to do, but if a single line is already set up being the douche going all the way up in the to-be-closed lane makes you an asshole.
No, it makes you the smart one.

The road going to my place has two lanes and one turns into just a right turn lane and the amount of assclowns that drive 80 in a 35mph zone just to get ahead of 2-3 cars is insane.

It used to drive me into a rage but I can now just shake my head and let it go. Nothing is going to make assholes stop being assholes.

If it actually worked. People racing up in the merge lane rarely zipper, and instead just jam their way into the through lane, backing up the through lane for everyone.

I know what a zipper merge is supposed to be.

People racing up in the merge lane

Should not be happening. If everyone merged at the merge point, the "merge lane" would be almost as saturated and slow moving as the through lane. How are the assholes even racing up?

Damned if I know how, but I know almost none of them ever seem to be willing to zipper properly and just threaten to hit your case if you don't let them through.

They treat it like a cheat code and not the social contract it's supposed to be.

Nah, zipper merge or not I ain't waiting. Canadians are really bad about moving over the second they see the lane is going to end a mile down the damn road so there will be a huge mile long line with a completely empty lane next to it. F that I'm cruising right to the merge and if you think you're going to be cute and block me by sitting 3/4s in the other lane then I'll just use the shoulder.

Gotta try and get as close to the car in front of you so there's no gap for them to squeeze in.
Or just let it go. It likely doesn't add more than a minute to your drive time.
My go to is moving half into the merging lane.

Line cutting fuckfaces is why merging locations get bottlenecked every. Fucking. Day.

Again, say 20 cars are coming up to a merge on a 2 lane road, it should be 10 cars in each lane that zipper merge as they go through the 1 open lane. If 9 of the people decide to merge way too early, the 1 person isn't cutting anything, those 9 people are the ones willingly getting in the back of the line and causing the traffic backup.

No, the ones causing the traffic jam are the ones going all the way up to the end and trying to jam themselves in at the last second, because then they're stopping the entire lane to make everyone wait for their main character ass instead of merging smoothly further back.

By law in most states objectively true. The merging lane must yield to the trough lane. Nobody is obligated to let those fuckers in. Honestly it's the over polite fucks who are gumming up the works letting them in.
