Should not be happening. If everyone merged at the merge point, the "merge lane" would be almost as saturated and slow moving as the through lane. How are the assholes even racing up? Damned if I know how, but I know almost none of them ever seem to be willing to zipper properly and just threaten to hit your case if you don't let them through.
