Both of them (Lost Levels and Super Mario USA) are basically officially produced equivalents to rom hacks.

Lost Levels (The Japanese SMB 2) being a remake of the first game, only much harder and World 9 being a shout out to the glitches version of levels.

Super Mario USA (America's SMB 2) being a reskin of another game.

And just both of them making Luigi more distinct than Mario, plus being single player.

Back in the NES days all the first 3 were awesome and I know most people default to SMB3 as their favorite but I always preferred SMB2 in America. I just loved the ability to use 4 characters. I liked using Luigi. I liked the design of the game and the music. It just really resonated with me.

Peach best girl.

Her being playable made SMB2 a bazillion times better than "Lost Levels" (which really was just a Hard Mode hack of the original game)

It is neat how both versions gave Luigi unique characteristics. Ol' Luigi went back into the shadow of Mario though for 3 and future games. Luigi will always be my fav.

I am so glad nintendo did what they did with that doki doki panic mario bros. make-over. I also absolutely loved me some super mario bros 2 USA and would have actually gotten turned off of the lost levels had we got that back then. (Not because of the difficulty, more so it doesn't look all too different from the game we just got before it).

I also appreciate how a lot of the enemies like bob-ombs, shy guys, sniffits, ninjis, birdo and so on became mario verse regulars.

.......still really, really wish we got mouser as a playable mario kart character one day though.

I love SMB 2 USA. The difficulty would have definitely pissed me off though for the OG. Hell I barely played the Lost Levels on Super Mario All Stars and that let you save often, Just back then I had no patience for that crap. I don't now again but it depends on the crap, I guess.

Both of things have elements of truth to them, but are not really the whole story.

It's true that Nintendo decided not to localize their SMB2 because it was deemed too difficult for American players, but this was determined by having one American play test it. The guy worked in a warehouse. It also wasn't the only reason. Japanese players didn't respond entirely favorably to it because it was too similar to its predecessor. And personally, I found the original much harder.

On the second point, Doki Doki Panic was kind of an honorary Mario game anyway. It was made by the same people who made SMB1, according to the same design philosophies. To the point that they actively changed direction a number of times to keep it from being a straight clone. SMB2 also isn't a straight reskin. There are a number of differences beyond graphics, including the ability to run, shrinking when getting hit and the omission of a progress tracker that spammed all four characters' progress to unlock the true ending.

One man named Howard Phillips. Otherwise a deity of the American branch lol I trust his judgment for that case.

At the time, though, he was a guy who worked in the warehouse.

I suppose that's not entirely fair. Nintendo did bounce a number of games off of him in those days.
