Yeah I love that movie. Much better than Men in Black and Independence Day.

I think it's really solid. Some scenes are cheesy 2000s action movie you can find by the shovel-full in other films...but other scenes are poignant, smart, and at times haunting. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but the good scenes make it a very good movie.

Its biggest flaw was being a bad adaptation. I don't really remember finding it a bad film in its own right.

I never rated it as high as a couple people here, but I thought it was decent (by itself)

as an Asimov fan it was hot garbage

Yeah it's always hated by fans of the original stories of the author. But as its own Hollywood blockbuster it's not half bad. It's directed by the guy behind both dark city and the crow, so you can see his influence there amid all the Hollywoodification of this movie. Has prime era will Smith with the douchey beanie that was a thing in the early 2000s crappy fashion. Also the hilarious sneaker advertisement.

But I really liked the murder mystery idea, the reveal, and Alan tudyk as sonny was freaking great. It honestly could have been a great movie with some tweaks here and there.

The best part of the movie is when Will Smith tells the Robot "A robot can't write a song, a robot can't draw a beautiful picture." and then the robot immediately BTFOs him by looking at him and saying "can you?"

But I really liked the murder mystery idea,
This was an idea lifted the robot novels, The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, and The Robots of Dawn. They also lifted the way the three laws work from the same novels. I actually wrote a stackoverflow answer about this:

It's also hilarious to people watching it 20 years later in the wake of this crazy AI generated content phenomenon that's overtaken the world.
