Game is easy as fuck, you really can just go wild and do whatever the hell you want as long as you're around the right level for the map you're trying to tackle

As soon as you unlock it, promote everyone and everything.

Take the difficulty you think you would like to play at, and increase it by +1. If you wanted to play on expert anyways, too bad.

If you think a team is shit, and you don't know why, simply watch the battle and find the issue.

Read the skills you get, and check for the (Limited) Tag. Only one limited skill can trigger per event, that's includes all "At start of battle" skills.

Afflictions (like burn, freeze, poison, etc) are a sub-type of debuffs. All Afflictions are debuffs, but not all debuffs are afflictions.

Channeling my inner Fire Emblem with these level ups. Only a single HP most of the time? :/

what happens if a homie in my squad has their HP reduced to 0? Obviously they die for that map I guess but is there a permanent consequence or anything I need to watch out for?

It's not permanent except for the highest difficulty which you can't unlock till beating the game. Feel free to let them die
