Current Events > 100%'d the DKC trilogy in Japanese for the 1st time >_> AMA?

100%'d them in English at least once a year since forever >_> (for those "ach-tually" nerds, yes that means 101% in 1, 102% in 2, and 103% or 105% in 3 depending on my mood)

Fun differences I noticed:

DKC1 has a way more vibrant and colorful title screen
You can kill the rock-krocs with a handslap while they're curled up lol
Manky Kong takes 2 jumps from Diddy to kill
The world map actually has the ! at the end of the world names to signify that you found every secret in that world (US DKC1 doesnt have this)
Apparently the game is overall easier with different enemy placements and more DK barrels, but I didnt really notice >_>

The only thing I noticed in DKC2 is that it only costs 1 banana coin to save instead of 2

DKC3 doesnt have much either. There's more bees in the Lost World level where you gotta scale the cliff by jumping on the upward shooting barrels
And when you beat K Rool in Lost World, it auto moved you to Wrinkly's Cave so that she'll tell you about the banana birds. In the US, it just unceremoniously dumps you on the map and you gotta figure out to go to Wrinkly's yourself >_>
They also fixed the missing G in the Rocket Ship level

Overall the Japanese versions came out later and are easier (except 3 which is technically harder in 1 level I guess). It was kinda interesting see and mix it up a bit, but I probably wont do this again >_>

I also replay the trilogy every so often; I know all three games like the back of my hand at this point. I never thought to try the JP versions.

Honestly some days I like 2 more and some days I like 3 more lol. I think I usually rank 3 higher more often >_> But they all have their strengths
1 has the best atmosphere
2 has the best level designs
3 has the best side content

Yeah I can 100% them from memory no prob since I was a kid >_> The Japanese versions arent crazy different but it was an interesting change of pace so why not try it

DKC1 I can do in an hour, DKC2 and 3 I can do in 3 hours each. I did DKC1 and half of 2 on a plane ride a few days ago lol

I can complete DKC1 in an hour, 2 in 2 hours, and 3 takes me about 5.

2 hours is pretty good time for DKC2. Nice

I think it's closer to 2:30. I'd have to try again.

That's actuqally pretty impressive.

I did 105% for DKC3 in Japanese but I'm iffy on doing it like that >_> I like the higher percentage but the game is less fun like that. Like if you lose a Kong, sometimes that means you gotta replay the entire level to get a bonus that needs a teamup. 103% is definitely more fun and I usually just stick to that after I do 105% file on whatever I'm playing DKC3 just to have it as a trophy file lol

I did DKC in 57 min and DKC2 in 1h 36 min, one day I will see if I can do DKC3 in less than 2 h.

Complete every level, find all bonus rooms, visit all four animal bonus rooms once.

Nah, it's just beat all the levels and get all the bonus rooms. Animal rooms, bananas, and KONG letters dont do anything towards it. DKC2 adds DK coins and DKC3 adds Banana Birds on top of that.

This is making me want to pop in my copies of the DKC games and go through full playthroughs on all of them. I've full completed DKC3 many times over the years, never done it for the other two.

Think it's more of a motivation thing. DKC3 was always my favorite so I played it more, got more familiar with it, and wanted to complete it more.

How much of the character dialogue was changed (assuming you can read Japanese)?

DKC3 is by far my favorite. I love the environments in that game.

I used Google Translate once in a while but from what I can see, all the dialogue looks the same.

The animal bonuses have no effect on percentage as far as I know. I'm 90% sure in DKC1 all you have to do is find every bonus level.

Dang, then it is possible to cut it down some more minutes.

Yeah I just did it and I never entered an animal room once cuz they're annoying lol

And in DKC1 you dont even have to "beat" the bonus room. You can kill yourself immediately and it still counts. Only 2 and 3 require you to beat the bonus level

both versions had the hardest level of all (actually more of an annoyance to some). the level in which controls are reversed in the water.

I actually did start up DKC1 again yesterday. Been itching to for a bit, but this top was the final push. I really need to get a CRT tv. My OSSC works great for pixel art, but games with pre-rendered assets like the DKC games, don't clean up near as well with the thing.

The US having worse covers is kind of tradition but title screens also being worse is new to me

You can easily play these by creating an NSO linked account to a Japanese account. If you have an account in your home country, you can simply make a new profile and link it to a Japanese account on the same console, and download the JP NSO apps. There is exclusive stuff on there too (nothing too interesting though)

That's how I did it to play the japanese DKC games lol. I wish I didnt have to make a separate account to access this stuff.

I actually prefer the US title screen. The Japanese one is very busy and the animal buddy models do not look great up close like that.

I believe that the Japanese title screen is also the Japanese boxart.

I like the Japanese one because it gives my boy Squawks some limelight (even though he only appears as a minor character in one level )
