There are probably less religious people, but the ones who are, are probably becoming more extreme. I base this on nothing.

Here's some data covering religious affiliation of Americans from 1972 to 2021.

In that time, the percentage of Americans who identify as Christian dropped from 90% to 63%.

In the same time, the percentage who identify as having no religious affiliation went from 5% to 29%.

https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2022/09/13/how-u-s-religious-composition-has-changed-in-recent-decades/

It should be noted though that this change is largely not reflected in government. In the current Congress, about 88% of members identify as belonging to some Christian denomination.

Perhaps, but in this day and age, saying you're an atheist or something not christian is basically political suicide. No political figure with any measure of sense would say otherwise.

Yeah, I tried to be deliberate with my language to say these are numbers for how people identify religiously. It's hard to know what's in people's heads. If you want to argue there's more incentive in politics for a non-believer to claim to be Christian than there is in American society in general, that's probably true. To what extent that influences these numbers I don't know.

yeah it's true it is like congress tends to be much more religious , much than the avg american, mostly christian. Why though? And have heard some say that many congress don't really believe it irl or something like that. Have heard others say whether they believe it or not irl does not matter.

This is my general observation also. There remain some who are reasonably religious, but their numbers are falling. It's either all or nothing it seems.

Culturally we offer a large amount of deference and respect to religious figures, even if they're not actually ours. A pastor is trusted on the basis that he is a pastor, and respected likewise. I'm reasonably sure that that kind of baked in religiosity is going to be around loooooong after the change from majority religious to majority secular, should that change ever actually happen.

Should that change ever happen? You have any prediction on the amount of time for this......?

Look, I'm a quintessential fedora wearing angry atheist, take my opinion on "should" with a grain of salt.

Time? I don't know that it ever will, the uk is way more secular than the states and has been for a long time, yet the same religious deference still applies. It's baked in and I'm not sure that it ever really will come out.
