People don't say this any more.
The Engineer still says it in game but nobody bats an eye.
At what point did people stop enjoying this line?

Joke response sure, but I decided to look up how TF2 was doing at this time anyway.
In May 2013 the first community created update launched. The bottom of the post reads "This doesn't mark the end of Valve-Produced TF2 updates, by the way. As far as we're concerned, there's plenty of room for both to happily co-exist."
And look where we are now.

I miss old TF2 a lot.
The old playerbase made it what it was and now they're gone.

There was a video on YT made by Chet Faliszek recently, one of the former devs. He was talking about how disappointed he is with what's happened to the game. He compared how it used to be to a chatroom with guns. I really like that description. Definitely makes me think of 32-man Dustbowl, Balloon Race or achievement maps. Even Hydro stalemates were kind of comfy if people were joking around.

it really was. I put 2000 hours into that game, and the vast majority of that time was spent on a modified 2fort map on a specific community server. When they fucked over community servers, I knew the game was dead to me. That 2fort server was online for a good while after that but it was always empty. I remember joining and just walking around in complete silence hoping the server would fill up, but any time a person would join, they'd leave after a couple minutes.

I used to make that effort for some maps. There was always this endless game on the Cyberpunk map with no win condition so people would just show up and fight over the disco room. I liked bringing one or two people there to mess around and hope other people joined.

Matchmaking really was the point things started speeding downhill (Though you could argue Mannconomy or the F2Ps were the beginning of the end.)
Even in 2014 you could feel the game's identity diminishing from it. Everyone had the same few binds that they probably spammed in every other game. I'd attribute it to a few other things but matchmaking hit TF2 the hardest.
