There is a difference between "German german" with everything being nice and formal and whatever, and just casual.

And suddenly you have the polite and professional "Auf Wiedersehen!" and the casual "tschau" or "tsch" or whatever.

And if you say "bye", no one will take it unusual either, it's pretty common here too

I loved visiting Germany for a week when I was there and cant wait to go back on a more extended trip. Driving on the autobahn was so easy and actually enjoyable compared to anywhere else including America. Its like most of them know how to drive on the autobahn over there lol.

The beer is great and sometimes the food can be meh to great depending on where you go. Their dessert game is top notch though. The people are beautiful there and mostly friendly and mostly speak English too!

I had ice cream so far and it was delicious. And fucking cheap too! Only 1,50 for a small cup. In America it's like $3-4! What a rip

Talking has been 80% English-understanding so far for me. I will note that there is next to no written English on stuff around here >_> Tokyo and Lisbon had a bunch of English signs and such around so it wasnt too bad, but they were also major cities too. I havent been in a major city here yet so that's probably why

Germany doesnt really do English. This is because they actually still want to speak their own language, unlike some bordering countries.

Had a lovely dinner with some other tourists tonight. One was from Tennesse and the other was from London. It was funny to all be talking to each other in 3 different dialects of English at the same time lol (Southern, British, and uh....vanilla? >_>)

Id love to but I'm not good with foreign language. Best I've ever done is used to be able to read and write French but I struggled with it spoken or speaking it.

So at best I'd be walking around with a notepad or a small dry erase board.

Don't let some language skills prevent you from traveling.

In Germany most people should understand english, so that should be no issues if you have questions, and these days google translate / google lens is crazy too.

Of course, this always depends on the destination.

I was 2 weeks in Japan, with nothing more than a language guide for tourists, and some elementary stuff. I was in Denmark, and my danish is worse than Neon's german.

Google Translate and Google Maps does like 90% of the legwork nowadays. Even in Japan, I had almost not trouble getting around or talking to locals with those apps. It isnt that bad with technology now and 80% of Germans I've talked to understand English which is easier than other countries I've been to. Just go for it >_>

Also every American would love meat snacks and fries the way Europe has them. Look for a Frittenbude (any will do generally). Very different from US fastfood.

Man, this country is aggressively anti-english lol. I was looking at the ingredients of a candy wrapper to check for nuts cuz I'm allergic, and it had them in German, French, and Dutch. Nothing at all in English lol. Then I tried to use an ATM and the whole thing was only in German and wouldnt even accept my bank card and just yelled at me in German, which probably said something like "Get fucked American lolololol".

I did find a multi-language ATM that worked later but damn, written english is really sparse here >_> Google Translate is getting a work out on this trip

Do American candy bars have other languages on them? Other than English and Spanish, I mean. Genuine curiosity, I enjoy learning new things.

Dutch, French and German are the standard, cause Belgium, the Netherlands and France are right next door.

And we all dislike the UK, so English is usually omited.
