It's really not even close. Sure, it's easier to get to the credits. But you're ignoring like 90+% of the challenges if you stop playing there.

Modern games are positively overrun with cascading difficulty levels, up to ten or twenty, maybe even more. They're also obsessed with having a one hit kill mode and/or a permadeath mode which unlike the classics can cost you dozens of hours per death. Then there's the thing with the boss rushes and the way that modern platformers are made by complete psychopaths that expect players to attempt one level literally 1000 times.

Theyre harder in a different way. NES games were either obtuse or difficult as a holdover from the coin grab arcade mentality. Something like Vanquishs challenge 6 is far more difficult though.

Nah, I've beaten plenty of them. They're mostly about memorization. It's true you get some cheap deaths when you don't know what's coming, but there's hardly anything on the system you shouldn't get past on say your fourth or fifth try.

There are a few notable exceptions, but even those can't touch the standout examples from the last 20 or so years. I think the two hardest NES games for me were Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Double Dragon. Both because of that one level. But neither gave me remotely as much trouble as Slay the Spire's Ascension 2 (of 20) or Vanquish's Tactical Challenge 6.

I can't speak for all of gaming, but despite certain people claiming otherwise, this is 100% the case with WoW. LFR raids are mostly braindead, but there are three more difficulty tiers. Just compare the abilities and mechanics of Kel'thuzad, the final boss of the sainted, tough-as-nails vanilla WoW:

The thing is, no version of WoW is actually very difficult.

Depends on genre, some modern indie RPG roguelites can be ridiculously hard (e.g. Slice & Dice or Across the Obelisk (if you do every corruption challenge))

Its true that some boss fights like oh, Weiss in the FF7 remake DLC battle are just so insane that it seems they are torturing the player on purpose but, at that point your paying to torture yourself I guess.

I've barely been playing games outside point n click adventures and dmc 3 so idk the current state of things overall.

I have played through adventure games ranging from the 80s to the 2020s and noticed the older ones are generally tougher without a guide. They frequently have very obtuse puzzles and few or no hint on where to go next.

For dmc style masher games ive noticed newer ones are more accessible with the controls (dont require as much precision and speed, more user friendly layout) so it's easier to start doing cool looking stuff off the bat. That said, newer ones also have way more mechanics to play with and enemies are definitely more aggressive. So the difficulty just lies elsewhere now.

The difference is that hard games have a special designation now. "Its the Dark Souls of X" or you're playing on the "Super Duper Hard Mega Die" difficulty. Back in the day, that was just regular games.

A game being challenging was the neutral state, now the neutral state is the game playing itself.

Do you actually have to learn an entire list of mechanics for every boss in WoW raids?
I assumed you only had to learn the few that matter to your class since you're only one person in a big group. Other classes would dispel/heal/take aggro for the other moves right?

Modern PvP gaming is much more difficult. Suckier maps, environments too detailed to quickly spot enemy players, rapid fire meta changes, P2W shenanigans, emphasis on ranking and other FGC technicalities.

Nah, each role is only dealing with a few of those mechanics (though that's also true of old bosses), I was just using it to give an idea of how complicated they've become over time.

Not to mention actually playing your normal rotation. I didn't play myself at the time, but apparently the best rotation for warlock in Black Temple was to just spam Shadow Bolt and nothing else.
