Thirty years after its release, the supernatural superhero thriller The Crow is getting the remake treatment from director Rupert Sanders and star Bill Skarsgrd. But Alex Proyas, the director of the original 1994 film starring Brandon Lee, doesnt think thats a good idea.

I really dont get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work, Proyas wrote on Facebook. And Im certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fans response speaks volumes. [The Crow] is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. Thats how it should remain.

Lee, the son of martial artist and Hollywood legend Bruce Lee, died at age 28 on the set of The Crow when he was fatally shot by a prop gun. The film, about a musician who comes back from the dead to get revenge against the gang who murdered him and his fiance, was completed using a stunt double and digital effects.

The movie became a huge success both critically and commercially and was subsequently dedicated to Lee and his fiance, Eliza Hutton. Lees death sparked widespread calls for stricter safety measures on Hollywood sets, and mirrors the fatal accident on the set of Rust, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died after a bullet was discharged from a gun held by Alec Baldwin.

In his Facebook post, Proyas linked to a CBR article titled The Crow Remake Trailer Gets Staggering Amount of Dislikes on YouTube. The trailer for the remake, which also stars FKA Twigs, received a fair amount of backlash online.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sanders said he considers his version of The Crow to be a tribute to Lee. Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and its definitely something that weve always had in mind through the making of the film, he said of Lees death. Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope hes proud of what weve done and how weve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. Theres a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill [Skarsgrd] feels like he is a successor to that.

edit: topic title should have "remain Brandon Lee's legacy", but I guess it didn't have the space

Yeah, the movie should just adapt a different character that isn't Eric Draven.

Doesn't help how ridiculous the reboot Eric looks either.

Heard it was disliked quickly and its not surprising

I thought the new trailer looked especially good.

Apparently a few hours after it was posted online, there were more than 50k dislikes.

So what do I know? :/

There is no reason to remake the 90s film.

The crow as a franchise is one where you never have to use the same story and characters twice. There is so much they could do with the concept and yet they remake the first film instead. It is insulting, and lazy.

People really need to get over them remaking a 30-year-old movie that has three or four absolutely terrible sequels attached to it. They want to revive the franchise from a clean slate for a modern audience, that's completely understandable and in no way invalidates the existence of the original.

Don't forget the TV series that also used Eric Draven

I want them to revive the franchise. My problem is that they are not doing that. They are trending old ground when the franchise has lots of unexplored areas.

I liked the original growing up so much I probably saw it 30 times. I'm not usually this guy and welcome updates/revamps for the most part, but I have no interest in this whatsoever and likely won't watch it.

They are on their way back from a romantic get-away at a beach iirc, when their vehicle breaks down on a deserted road. The car full of gang members stops, they get out, they shoot Eric in the head paralyzing him while they rape and kill Shelly in the car. He sees the whole thing because he's conscious but paralyzed. She ends up dying in the process, and the last gang member to take his turn on her does so after she dies. Eric then dies hours later in the hospital.

It's been a great many years since I read it, but it's so fucking grim that it's remained with me.

Tbh I don't think people even know The Crow is an adaptation or has sequels or anything. They just know the movie. So yeah that's what Hollywood is gonna remake.

It's easy to be creative.

The problem is making a creative movie that people will pay to see.

Already this trailer has way more attention than it otherwise would because it's a remake of a cult classic.

i hate this whole "it's a tribute to him" excuse nonsense. the reason they remade the original is for money. not that there aren't other crow stories to adapt, none of that nonsense. the reason they remake it is simply solely for money and to bank off of the idea that it's a remake. there's no tribute here.

but who cares, in a few years it'll be just one more addition to the absolutely abysmal franchise they've made out of the IP which in itself has been a huge insult to the "legacy" to begin with.

I don't disagree with that sentiment. I've still got the original movie on my shelf, I can watch it whenever I want, regardless of what happens to the franchise.

However, that doesn't make the it any less disappointing that the new movie looks incredibly mediocre (at best).
