Electric. It's worth spending more on them. They brush more effectively and can help you with timing. The one I have buzzes every 30 seconds so you can easily time each quadrant of your mouth.

Soft bristles are what you should be using for brushing. Hard bristles exist because of marketing and people 'thinking' they know what is best. Of course they'll make hard bristles if consumers will buy it over competitors only making soft bristles.
