cartoon/video game counterparts. For example, Bella Ramsey as Ellie in Last of Us. There were a lot of complaints about this.

I've literally never understood this unless it was a vital feature to the story. Does it actually matter precisely what ellie looks like, at all? Or maybe her having good chemistry with the actor playing joel and being able to sell the character as a believable teenager going through the apocalypse is more important?

I dunno I thought she was fucking incredible in that role, and also she's 14 so talking about how she looks at all is weird.

It's a bonus, but it ultimately doesn't matter. Prime example is William DaFoe's Norman Osborn. Looks nothing like the guy, but no one holds that against him because he's just that good.

To be fair they used an actual actor as the basis for her character design. People also would've complained if they got some other black actor to play Nick Fury instead of SLJ.

I found Tiny Tom playing 6'5" 250lbs Jack Reacher a bit jarring.

Mainly because the books never stop reminding you how massive Reacher is. It's key to the character.

The more absurd thing here, IMO, is the idea that finding an actor who looks like the character is even possible.

It might be sometimes, but as a rule, you really shouldn't expect it.

The complaints were more about how she wasn't as "cute" as the original actress. Which was kinda disturbing, when you consider that it was pretty obvious that Ellie was underage.

As far as other casting, as long as the actor/actress somewhat resembles what I picture the character to look like, I have no issues with it. There's very few, if any, instances where the actor/actress was so far off from what I picture the character as that it took me out of the performance.

My first exposure to that character was the Amazon series and then I watched one of the Cruise movies after and I was like, "Yeah, nobody's gonna keep talking about what a giant THIS version is."
