I'm currently in England and traveling to Dublin. I already had this vacation planned for months. (I'm from NC, to clarify.)

But I was laid off last Tuesday unexpectedly from my Copywriter job in marketing for a casino game company.

The CEO himself is the one that told me.

They're giving me 8 weeks of severance pay and I'm discussing the possibility of them paying out the lease on my apartment.

Problem is I'm dating someone right now, and it's difficult to imagine things working if I leave this town. (They paid for me to relocate to that town after they hired me.)

I was a teacher for 4 years, so I could go back to that for a while, but man, this sucks. I was only there for 10 months and I was remote 4 days a week.

Feels bad, man.

Sorry to hear that. Thats even rougher than a normal layoff considering you relocated to another country. Thats tough. Not much more to say than that. Sorry this happened to you.

Well I actually am from NC and I just moved to another town in NC.

This vacation is mt first time outside the U.S.

sign nothing, you may be signing away your right to additional severance and compensation. let it breath for a bit and review all that is owed. it is possible to negotiate higher-than-offered severance

Oh I read that totally wrong. I thought you were working in England and had relocated from NC and you were just going on vacation to Dublin. Still sucks but I understand now. Still a tough situation but you should be able to adapt better.

Hell, they didn't even let me sign anything. They just did it.

I'm in talks with the CEO and head of HR to pay the rest of my lease in addition to my severance, because I can't even apply for an apartment or anything without proof of income.

Sorry to hear that, TC. Im still washing dishes instead of pursuing my tech career that I studied for in college, but at least theres no shortage of work and Im unlikely to get the axe by my boss since Im practically the only dishwasher that can be trusted not to somehow injure themselves or inadvertently poison everybody else by mixing incompatible chemicals together and dumping them down a drain after cleaning at the end of a shift, thus causing the entire building to have to be evacuated until the resulting noxious fumes dissipated. Now the latter was definitely an unforgettable experience, just saying.

I am sorry to hear that. You can look into adult ad jobs. If you want to go back into teaching. Right now it might not be spots open for normal teaching job. But Adult ed might be easier to get in the middle of the year. Plus they should have some of those in very county. So you can say next to your SO.

Incredibly fucked up to do that when you're on vacation. Fucked up to do it regardless. My condolences hope you get shit figured out soon.

We had over 40 layoffs since January 2nd. The CMO quit right before I got laid off. Apparently, the CEO just let him do whatever for a year and they actually hated everything he did, including wanting a Copywriter. So, I kinda got purged with him.
