You can't spend what you haven't got, so we need to reduce the amount the government spends on some of the stuff listed here.

I took the list of categories from the IFS, and removed "Overseas aid" because it was the smallest one.

Your task is to pick the one that should be slashed.

US actually spends more per pupil than any other first world country but ends up with below average scores on international tests. More money won't fix the issue, because they aren't actually concerned with quality education. And the fact that this topic implies the TC thinks the government has to pay for spending and therefore must raise taxes shows how bad the education is (the government doesn't pay for even close to all of its spending, it takes out debt, as does every other first world country).

A quick google suggests that this is not the case.

Finland has a superb education system, but is relatively low on that expenditure list.

They support and trust their teachers. Education is valued highly, and everything is left for professional educators to decide. It's not a political football for hate-pandering politicians, and schools don't provide a soapbox for extremist lunatics like they seem to in the US.

I don't think everyone's tax has to go up to pay for an equitable system of amenity and safety nets for the less fortunate.

But I'm happy to pay more, and I'll always vote for more spending on education, health, welfare etc. over tax cuts.

The only one ahead on there is Luxembourg. It's one of the richest countries in the world per Capita and a microstate. Almost every person there would be considered upper-middle class at worst. You can't really compare. The US has terrible education because the standards are set by individual states and often based on agricultural past that no longer exists and a bunch of culture war stuff then occurs where a state is more concerned with banning "woke" than ensuring kids can read or do basic math.

I don't know what school you went to, but our public school had sports and textbooks but it didn't matter worth shit because the teachers were more concerned with sleeping with students or playing games on their computer than educating. I didn't learn shit until I got to college and that was a huge catch-up experience because despite taking classes called calculus, I never actually learned calculus.

There's nothing wrong with schools spending money on sport.

It promotes health and exercise and can be a pathway to achievement and self-esteem for kids who aren't academic.

(Same goes for art and music).

Whe. I played football our school was pristine had nice teachers the works. Our football team had middling coaches and 25 year old uniforms. Rival school looked like a dump. It would be east to believe they didn't even have a janitor. Can't speak on the teachers. They gor new uniforms for football every 2 years and they where nice uniforms. Only middle school team to have logos on their helmet in that district/region

Decrease defense, increase science funding. Could double the funding for science and have almost no impact on the defense funding.

But all US science agencies are looking at massive cuts in the upcoming budget.

I'm fine with spending on defense. I am however not fine with being price gouged for defense. A steel plate costs $1,500 despite costing $32 to make? Yea fuck off with that. I guarantee if you went through and stopped the gouging, we'd lower the deficit annually.

I knew someone in the military and it's of their belief they do this as a way to build bu a secret stash of money for like black sites and shit. Like they pay all this money but they are actually keeping most of it just now it's in a hidden account. But on paper they spent it on a hammer or something.

MilSpec stuff costs more because the compliance burden is much higher. For example, that clutch plate is designed and certified to function for x number of hours under heavy load in desert-to-arctic environments, and be air-droppable. The materials are traceable back to where and when they were mined, and there are auditable records of every worker involved in design, manufacture, testing, quality control, etc., of that specific item. The factory is ISO-9000 certified. Their software development process is CMMI certified. The HR department can produce detailed selection and conflict-resolution records. The company itself might have to maintain a special designation (e.g., "8A"). Obviously, cleared work requires even more overhead (NISPOM), and can't be outsourced. Even the solicitation/bid/award process can take thousands of hours. I'm certainly not going to defend government overspending, but it's not as simple as "I can get it cheaper at Home Depot".

it out paces inflation for the last 30 or 40 years. No excuse for that.

This is probably an unpopular opinion I have. Trying to prove money is spent well is actually an expensive thing! I'm not saying it should be done, but it is an expense.

It takes labor hours and additional time to procure things through rigid specific methods.
I think anyone who has worked in a large and small company, and has had to purchase things has gone through the pain. At a big company, I'm spending multiple hours filling out expense report and sending emails back and forth to show I'm purchasing from the lowest cost place.

At a startup company: "here's my credit card. Go buy it, I'll speak to accounts later"
