Most were disappointed on launch in 2011, then it grew on people but now people say it's boring and shallow

This was not the case at all. If anything it was the opposite. People absolutely loved it and slowly realized it was one of those "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" games.

The game still holds up well. I've been replaying the game for the first time on a console (Switch) and it's still enjoyable.

I played through it in January on a lark for trophies. Still alright, but the combat is rather mediocre and most questlines are disappointing. One thing that ages like wine is stealth archery, though!

The best thing about it has always been the exploration. The world surprisingly does hold up in most ways, in the sense that most games haven't done any better.

Technically yes considering there isnt a high fantasy open world action rpg that is better technically. That said after pouring hundreds of hours into Skyrim I will never return. But I spent even more time in Morrowind and I still fire that up occasionally.

Skyrim was always a mediocre game, without mods it's kinda lame.

It was great back then and is still great. It's not for everyone and that's fine. To each their own.

I replay it every 3-4 years.

ESO has somewhat better combat, but still has poor writing decisions and piss-easy difficulty. If you consider Skyrim, ESO, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield, the future of ES6 doesn't seem quite as bright. Hopefully they don't fall into the usual pitfalls, haha.

I never played it. I'm interested but can't be bothered ultimately. I only have a Switch but I hear the game is bad without mods and PC gaming is too expensive for me.

It's a bit janky but it still mostly holds up just because nobody else has really tackled the same concept in the same way. Other AAA open world games are so scripted in comparison.

you can ultramod skyrim with the click of a button these days
grab a 2000 mod collection with 4k/8k textures on everything, dark souls style 3rd person combat (complete with lock on, dodge rolls, parries, light/heavy attacks, etc.) , high poly meshes for all NPCs including the PC, entire other continents added to the game with an expansion's worth of content each, massively overhauled weather and lighting effects, complete vanilla quest/gameplay/crafting/skill trees/dialogue/animation overhauls, new companions, items, armor, abilities, spells, etc.
just browse the collections page on nexus or wabbajack

My prediction for ES6 is they will decide the 18 skill trees of Skyrim is to complex for modern gamers and condense them into 3-4 skill trees. Combat, magic, stealth and maybe crafting.

I think the Quest with deadric God with the dog is one of my favorites. I'm not fond of his appearance in ESO.
