Looking at the 2024 path, it's still not going to be in my visual range. It's like maybe 30 - 50 or so miles north of me.

Probably going to take off work to see it. What I need to do is find good places in southern Illinois as well as a proper eye protection.

The one in 2017 was about an hour drive from me for the path of totality. It was absolutely stunning. The sky went dark rather suddenly (I expected more gradual dimming, but no, it's almost like a light switch at totality), birds stopped singing, everything went quiet. One of the coolest things about it was the entire horizon, 360 degrees, looked like sunrise. Fucking beautiful event.

This one, my parents are taking my husband and me to Hot Springs, AR. Looking forward to it!

2017 was a 6 hour drive so I didn't go. Where I was there was about 90% coverage and the sky didn't darken. I'm going this time with only a 3 hour drive. You have what a 1 hour drive, you should think about going.

If it didn't occur on a work day, and the weather was clear, I'd consider it. There's no guarantee that I'd be able to see it, or drive to a place to see it. It would be great to see a full eclipse, but I've missed out on others and am still living. I saw one back in the 90's when I was in middle school. Everyone in school was let out of class for it. I remember the sky getting darker and the temperature dropping and nature getting quiet.

Chicago will get a partial. I have already ordered glasses.

I have been thinking about ancient cultures that had accurate eclipse predictions but everyone thought the sun traveled around the earth.

The priest working out the numbers must have just sketched out their elliptical path for the earth, must have done the calculations and must have turned over the dates.

Does anyone think you could get accurate eclipse predictions if your model had the sun going around the earth?

They didnt use their model to make those predictions. They had centuries of data on when eclipses occurred and noticed the time interval pattern. Its the same with comets, we observed the repeating pattern and used that to guess the orbit. With Earth/Sun/Moon you can build accurate predictions using Earth as center but everything gets wonky when you try to add in the other planets.

It is amazing how much 5% of the sun is able to do. Totality catches your attention but be just a bit outside that band and walking around everything still looks normal and you'd have to reason to look up (which you shouldn't without the special glasses just as you shouldn't stare at the sun on a regular day).

[after some reading] I found an article in Britannica https://www.britannica.com/science/eclipse/The-frequency-of-solar-and-lunar-eclipses

"Because of the extra one-third day (and thus an additional eight hours of Earths rotation) in the saros, the eclipse recurs each time approximately 120 farther west on the surface of Earth. After three saroses, or 54 years and about a month, the longitude is repeated."

To be accurate the priest would still need to use the plane of the moon's rotation around the earth and the plane of the earth 's rotation around the sun. Just recording them and adding 54 years would come close but would not be precise.

Eclipse prediction is really old. If I recall, even Babylon had the rudimentary ability to predict eclipses.

Until recently, eclipse prediction wasn't really common knowledge. Christopher Columbus and Tecumseh are probably the 2 most famous people who used their knowledge of eclipses to persuade people of their "powers."

Accurate and precise are relative terms. If a priest predicted an eclipse, looked up at the sun, saw it get to 95% coverage that day, they'd likely still record that as an accurate prediction.
