Solo leveling is boring, it's easier if you have party leveling

Plus the OST has Sawano excellence

Sounds like most Anime based around video games.

Manwha and webtoons all look incredibly generic and boring, and to my understanding this is based on one

I assumed it was isekai garbage or based on video game mechanics, which I have no interest in watching stories where those play a key role.

Because it's sucks, badly.

It is, except the isekai is spawned as dungeons that appears on normal world.
Also the videogame mechanic, so far only MC has that mechanic. That's also the reason it's called solo levelling, only he can level up (so far)

Sounds like I made the right call skipping it.

I have been watching it. I kept seeing people praise it and decided to check it out. What I didn't realize back then though, was that the anime was just starting. The people that were praising it, were talking about the manwha. So now I have no choice but to wait each week to see what happens

Yesterday's episode was good though. I was expecting (episode 9 spoilers!) the three convicts to try and attack everyone. Didn't think the inspector was actually the problem lol.

The original webnovel and webtoon are Korean. The anime is actually made by a Japanese company with Japanese director and key staff. Though basically every modern Japanese animation company has a lot of Koreans working for them (and Korean directors now too like in Jujutsu Kaisen).

The anime adaptation even changed the setting to Japan and the characters are Japanese.

I wonder how it affect the Chimera Ant Arc

I'm watching it. It's not as cracked as everyone is hyping it up to be. I think there was more hype to it than Chainsaw man. I mean, it is better than CSM, but that's because the first season was mediocre. SL is better than that, but it's not living up to the hype.

And it's another series that can't get enough of it's exposition. Fucking lazy story telling.

Don't read the subtitle, listen to their name. Sung Jin-Woo is Shun Mizushino, Cha Hae-In is Kousaka Shizuku, etc.

Already read the manwha which is finished. It's also just another generic power fantasy.

I haven't really noticed any overly sexualized characters, but there are some good looking women in the show. The MC's friend, Lee Joohee, is one. There's also Cha Hae-in who had a pretty cool introduction scene.

Because I tend to avoid isekai unless theres a huge departure from the self-insert main character, NEET-wish-fulfillment, harem romcom, totally-not-Dragon-Quest formula.

This doesnt look like enough of a departure.

Well then you should check it out, because it's none of those. It's not an isekai, the MC was never a NEET (he works to help pay for his sister's tuition and his mother's medical bills), there's not even any romance so far, let alone a harem, and it doesn't give me Dragon Quest vibes either.

Make no mistake though, it is a power fantasy. The MC slowly becomes more and more OP. But it's been a fun show so far.

It's got really well animated fight scenes. The pacing of the anime is pretty bad, so I'd recommend just binging it every season to mitigate that aspect. It's a good show to just turn your brain off and watch the cool fights. It's okay to like it for what it is. I'm very much enjoying it.

If that's what you're looking for, I also recommend Ninja Kamui. It's cool af and has excellent music to fight to.

we're on what episode 8 or 9? and it's barely even started the plot proper because it seems like the anime directors really want to emphasize the dialogue and interactions between characters, when that's the complete opposite of what made the series popular in the first place
90% of the series is jinwoo monologuing about how badass he is, either internally or externally

and it's not that i dislike the exposition of side characters, but in a series like solo leveling, it feels about as pointless as when they spent time exploring a character in supernatural that was a girl not named charlie

Is there a bunch of unnecessary fan service in it? If not I'll check it out.

I tried, two episodes maybe three... it just wasn't good.

the manhwa is 200 chapters long
we're in the mid-30s chapterwise so far in the anime, so roughly 17% of the way through lol

Thankfully pretty tame so far. There's a few pretty girls but no emphasis on any of those aspects. They exist as characters that just happen to be female. Main girl is clearly into MC though. Yeah I'm with you there. People praise Konosuba so much, but it's one of the Isekai I couldn't get into.

If you want other Isekai without the excessive fan service, then I'd also recommend 'So I'm A Spider, So What?' and 'Ascendence of a Bookworm'. In Spider, the MC is a monster spider, so there's no fan service stuff going on there. And with Bookworm, the MC and her friends are mostly kids, so no fan service there either.

the source material is 90% fighting lol, the source material itself moves at mach speed. that's why it got so popular

there's about 2 characters that aren't jinwoo that matter in the long term
semi detailed:
yoo jinho and cha haein
so all the exposition and screen time and character interaction with anyone but these 3 that they've added to the anime just feels like padding
