Last year I set up my parents with new broadband. It cost 25 a month.

After a year, they sent her an email subtly detailing that she could either leave it alone and get the same package for 46 a month, or change to a "different" (read: the same) package for 25 a month.

Quite literally the exact same broadband offering but one costs 25 if you call and opt out or 46 if you don't.

Oh also they subtly detailed that its now a 12 month minimum term contract.

So in summary, charging old-age pensioners the equivalent of a couple of months worth of food for the privilege of not being able to understand this technology stuff.

I kind of don't want to say what I want to do to whoever cooked this up.

bullshit fees are a real problem everywhere

like movie theatres. I hate assigned seats, but THEY implemented them. They said it's easy to buy your ticket online before, okay, so I go to do it and they want 4 bucks. For? ordering online?

fuck that, they can go fuck themselves.

Ya, I was told to call and ask for the Retention Department the last time I was paying my bill.

$88 or so a month seems like a lot in 2024 for just internet.

I get mailers from Mediacom all the damn time advertising $29.99 a month! And then you read the fine print and there's like a $40 activation fee and a monthly fee to "rent" the modem and after the first 3 months the promo pricing goes away and it's like $79.99 a month lol.

The salespeople have massive discretion over the fees.

Every year when Sky try and raise the price of my TV and broadband, I call them and talk about cancelling the movie channels. This year they added Netflix and lowered the price.

But it's bullshit that I have to do that.

I pay $105/month for 200mbps down and 20 up. Except it's only good for speed tests, as Twitch and Youtube consistently struggle on 480p. Oh and torrents and certain VPNs usually mysteriously don't work. And their tech support is so fucking stupid I frequently have to explain to them what packet loss is.

It's either this or satellite

About the same price, except I'm supposed to get 500 down, (I'll have to look at what im getting actually) rarely get 100 down and I have to complain to them every other month, and suddenly my speeds go back up for a bit

Can I just cancel my internet for a month and then call them and get on the "new customer" rate for a year? 'Cause that would be kinda nice.

It definitely depends if you have a state with good broadband. I have 69$ a month now for gigabit fiber optic because I got in when it was 40$ a month for the first year. It went up after that ended, but I know that if I can keep such good rates by threatening to cancel sometimes, this is probably some of the best in the US. In Colorado through CenturyLink (formerly Quest & I'm sure everyone remembers Quest & how dog shit it was.)

Because the Internet service providers are part of an oligopoly with no regulations on charges and rates.

I love assigned seats. Makes it really easy to get exactly the seats you want without worrying about whether or not you're gonna be able to sit together. Or if you're gonna end up straining your neck in the front row.

it's something of 30 days after last service to get a discounted rate for a year.
account in good standing ie don't owe money to them.

only can speak of spectrum, wouldn't advise anything else because the options are crap or it's the only option available.

spoilers: avoid centurylink, they possibly could be an even worse provider depending on where you live.

It's our campaign system and capitalism run amok.

We used to have anti-trust laws in this country...well we still do but we pretend we don't and never enforce them.

Then on top of that we have a pay-to-play campaign system where these monolithic entities can lobby congress for a fraction of what they stand to gain from being allowed to operate as a greedy monopoly.
