spend 4 hours trying to get through Cait Sith solo challenge, try 2 different strategies I googled and none worked out. Give up, have supper, do youtube search, watch 1 video with a different strat. Try that strat, win it first try easily... almost enraging how that works out but just glad that's over with, at least. not going to dick around with last two legendary fights, ideally...

Mute all the sound effects and dialogue, then play the scene again. Bam, you've got your track.

Got up to the part of the OST where it's the chapter 14 music. This is probably the worst part of the soundtrack. All the songs are way too long and they lack the fun spark that a lot of the rest of the OST has. Feels more like a movie score (this is a bad thing).

So much of the OST is scorey. They start up a memorable motif and you're like "hell yeah" and then 3 notes later they drop it and switch to something else. Constant blue balls.

Chapter 14? like... the final boss sequence of songs? I'd take this game's ones over Remake's trio of Arbiter of Fate tracks, if anything they don't give me nearly as much of the final Sephiroth Reborn track as I'd like!

If you mean other stuff well, I'll see when I get there (currently paused somewhere in the gajillion QB tracks on the boat, lol).

Guys I just checked a vending machine again on my postgame file, there's no Revival materia in the vending machines. And there's none in my bags.

The one outside shinra mansion definitely has it, but yeah it's not all. At least not in all chapters.

disagree, I think it's great as a hiking track (the battle edit, while also good, not so much). Maybe biased from first experiencing it in-game but when I hear it now it makes me think of nature, coniferous trees, sunny days with clear blue skies. It makes me think of the promotional image with the party members overlooking the vast landscape of forests and mountains.

also the reason I'm popping back in here is I just got there on the OST and I'm pretty annoyed! Every so often on Remake OST they had a tendency to include cutscene (or whatever) buildup/denouement as part of a song. Beginning of Hell House and ending of Valkyrie were the worst travesties of that for me & my battle theme playlist, which I still listened to occasionally for the years afterwards even right up to Rebirth's release.

Now maybe Rebirth is doing that "unrelated music at beginning/end of a track" thing too but I haven't noticed until now, because I was waiting to hear this song in particular as arguably a top 5 song in the game for me. The official track is 4:35 in length but the first 54 seconds are crap buildup, I assume from the cutscene when you first reach the mountain. Unfuckingbelievable.

When I make my Rebirth battle theme playlist I am going to edit and cut out those first 54 seconds, damn. Super annoying.

I think you may care about the official release soundtrack more than anyone else in the world lol. Like for real though. And not hating, just making a statement.

Objectively true

Scores are meant to blend into the background. RPG music should be bombastic and memorable, and yes repetitive, so that it grinds itself into your brain.

Correct, but if just ONE level in a MMX game had acoustic music, we would all remember it.

I don't mean for the entire soundtrack to be wildly different than what you'd expect, but to throw a curve ball every now and then is really refreshing and fun.

Got the platinum last night. Just shy of 237 hours on the save file, PS5 says 244 hours on the game. Definitely did a lot more dicking around than others based on their reported platinum times but enjoyed every minute of it, even the shitty retry grinding on certain simulator challenges and a few hard mode bosses (i.e. DPS check on Red Dragon, lol).

Does the PS5 have a calendar that can show you much you were playing a game each specific day because I'd love to see those stats, that first week after Rebirth came out was the hardest I ever went on a videogame.

Funny thing is playing Rebirth had made me really want to replay the original game, which come to think of it, I am overdue on, pretty sure last time was early 2023. And those experiences in the early chapters and getting 100% region intel feel like a lifetime ago, already feeling the urge to start a new run to get the dopamine hits, lol. Maybe later this year.

haha yeah, well.... I basically don't listen to music outside of video game music nowadays, so the hype for the game coming out pretty well transferred to the hype for the OST coming out. And especially since I really dug Remake's soundtrack. It's still disappointing the number of tracks they're holding back for the Plus album and some of the decisions they made on included tracks like I posted about, but it is what it is, ideally Plus is out earlier than year's end.

and I acquired the bonus Disc 8 and at that point remembered Remake had the "international" (English) versions of songs in addition to the original Japanese whereas this soundtrack doesn't. So still stuck with Youtube for the Salmon, Kyrie, and (where I left off on listening) "Straight Outta Corneoland" battle tracks in English, dang. More songs for the Plus soundtrack, ideally.

(also forgot to comment on this earlier but I love how they got Grasslands and Nibel regions using the starting and ending portions of the Main Theme as their motifs, respectively, stylistically very cool and relevant)

I think I tried it once or twice just to see what it was like and yeah, that was it. Especially with the ease of getting items via the transmuter, just renders it useless. Probably would've had more value in Remake than Rebirth, though that also made me think how I literally never used Steal in either game other than when I needed to, lol.

Part of my lengthy platinum time is I had a challenge for myself to master all the materia in my possession, and in hard mode picked up even more materia to master so there'd be no chance of being short a materia in any setup I had. Like I was so excited to be able to purchase Luck Up in this game (whereas Remake limited you to what, 2? Darts and one of the gym challenges?) that I had bought 14 Luck materia in case I wanted to outfit 2 on every team member. I think by the hard mode final battle sequence I only had Luck materia on Tifa, what a shame...

Grats on the Plat. I'm not aware of any calendar of ingame play time, but PSNProfiles will show when you get trophies during the day by hour - sometimes I'll look back and notice some insanely long stint marked by a trophy in the middle of the night.

I could write thousands of words on how music is used in this game. So many songs, arrangements and motifs woven in, adding so much.

I know some people were wondering about the party comp for the final boss. So this run my relationships were (not counting Aerith cus dont think she matters) Barret > Tifa > Red > Yuffie.

Jenova party was with Barret and Yuffie. (Highest and lowest?)
Bahamut Whisper party was Barret, Tifa, Cait Sith.
Elemental Wings phase was Tifa, Red, Yuffie.

I wanna say Cait will always be against Bahamut Whisper and Yuffie against the wings. And the rest depends on affinity.

In my first run which was Tifa > Red > Barret > Yuffie:
Jenova: Tifa and Yuffie (again highest and lowest?)
Bahamut: Tifa, Red, Cait
Wings: Red, Barret, Yuffie

don't forget your Jenova party members also change between the first and third phases (where 2nd phase = sequence of 2-on-1- fights). In hard mode I had everyone at 100% compatibility so I can't provide any insight on this but my previous theory on whichever party member isn't in the main Jenova rounds will be in both Bahamut & Wings fights was proven true and, just like I wanted, it was Tifa. I had also gone back and replayed chapter 12 with Tifa as my date partner just in case that made a difference, might have had an impact but might've just been random.

but yeah I think I had posted earlier, and I had continued tracking the final battle teams of any streamers I was coming across, but I deleted all my tracking once I got my platinum which was dumb of me but too late now. I do know people with the same chapter 12 date didn't always have the same final battle formations, just couldn't find a recurring theme.... Yuffie being a constant for the wings fight might have been a thing too, I think

Might spin up my first game clear save file tonight just to check, since I had the.... ugh... Red XIII date in that one, so top compatibility at game's end. Will see how my compatibility stats for the final battles there match up w/ the character ratings.

I still don't know how the party is decided for the Sephiroth fight in Remake either. Some said it had to with amount of sidequests, or affinity, or how well you did against the whispers.

yeah my test turned up empty. with the playfile with Red XIII as my closest companion, who I'd gone on the date with (and since it was chapter selection, I even checked the "date" settings and it was still set to Closest Companion), selected chapter 14 easy mode, and the teams were

Red - Barret for start of Jenova fight
Yuffie - Cait for final Jenova phase

Red - Tifa - Cait for Bahamut
Tifa - Yuffie - Barret for the wings

so I did get Tifa with both fights and what I'm struggling to remember is.... did I actually get Tifa in both Sephiroth fights in my original playthrough. I really don't think I did (which contributed to me being so pissed off at the time), which if that were true would mean that, either by chance or by something else happening in Chapter 14 she got the plum "both Seph fights" spot. My earlier post in the topic had streamers with Barret and Red XIII in that spot (and they had the Barret and Aerith dates, respectively), but the date partner must not matter since I had the Red date/top compatibility with this file too.

....just very strange, would be nice if someone could crack this code at some point, I don't think Remake's rationale for final battle partners ever went beyond "characters who stagger during the whisper fights" but at least that was something. I did have Tifa use a limit during the "2-on-1" Jenova section, but so did Red XIII.

I've been stuck on the final Brutal Challenge for like a week. The last fight is such a wall.

Are you using the magic cheese strats or trying to fight through it legitimately? The way I eventually got by it was the cheese strat, Yuffie ATBrumal-ing while having other 2 party members using -aga spells, keeping the opponent bouncing around/preventing from making actions (other than the opening basic attack combo)

Yeah, I was using the Yuffie ATB strat and still hitting a wall with the final round. I'd get caught in the first Shadowy Chains, which I was prepared for, but would then immediately get hit with another. I didn't even think to parry it until I watch a YouTube vid last night, but lo and behold, everything clicked this morning and I beat it on my first attempt!

Congrats! Good luck with the rest (if you haven't already done them). The legendaries are a lot more fun than that set IMO.

Thanks! I just got through all the character-specific Legendaries, leaving only the final two trials to go. They're also the last hurdles I need to clear in order to complete Johnny's hotel (WHAT'S IN THE BOX) and earn the plat.
