It cost $1500 (plus speedo calibration, plus defense driving class) for a lawyer that reduced the penalty to a fine below the threshold where it would have mattered to my career ($250). It was a huge hassle. There's basically a cottage industry in VA dedicated to this. One interesting thing is that my car insurance actually went DOWN. I don't live in VA, and apparently it's the violation that transfers across state lines, not the penalty. Where I live, it was only a two-point ticket, and I had two "positive" (good behavior) points. I dont know anyone falsely accused of speeding but Im sure it happens. So out of principle I made myself as much of a pain in the ass as I possibly could.
