they did with Octopath Traveler and then chibi 3D with Bravely Default

That is just FFX so you are more or less asking if FFX did well and the answer is yes.

As someone that loves turned based games, I've accepted that they'll probably won't go back for the mainline games.

It would be cool if they did, but I don't expect to see it

1, 2, 3, tactics and 10 are the only turn based final fantasy games. And given the reason ATB was used, Final Fantasy really should just be action rpgs going forward.

I think they should develop more midsized turn based RPGs and actually market them.

Mainline FF is fine as it is, give or take some padding

they were doing that with the last year or so on the PS4 and apparently those didn't do well so they scrapped the team

Valkryie Profile Elysium was actual trash. It wasn't even a "Valkyrie" game, just some mobile game they reskinned and slapped the name on hoping it would sell.

Give up on Square making turn based FF.

If you want to get into a turn based RPG series start playing Trails / Kiseki

They already released the new Valkyrie Profile, but it's an action game.

No. They've already got Dragon Quest for the long running turn based JRPG series. I just want SE to finally nail the action combat. I really thought FF16 was gonna be it, since they hired the guy who worked on the combat in Dragon's Dogma and DMC V. But the combat still ended up pretty mid

Was the combat itself mid or did the content not take advantage of what it had to offer?
I've seen people praising the DLC boss fight for example and it looks way more involved than what you see from the base game.

What we want is a turn based, but still all new gameplay. They can't just put an old combat system into a new FF game.

Maybe it is really hard to make a new combat system nowadays.

There are other places to look for turn based by now. I say if Square wants to experiment with action so be it.

OH boy here we go with the "FF game" nonsense.

Id like it, but business-wise its probably a bad decision. Then again Like a Dragon is showing that turn based can still be successful, so maybe SE will be open to a turn based AAA game.

the last new game came out in 2016
but it did indeed overstay its welcome by the time you reach the penultimate dungeon

and while persona is by far from the worst offender, gimmicky turn based battle systems (ie: match enemy weakness to win) are so droll, especially when they have an elemental/type wheel that's more than you can count on both hands

like i said, that's why i like raid's battle system (even if the monetization ruins the game), because it's got simply 3 types in its wheel followed by an agnostic type. and being able to see enemy intents and turn orders for both sides, coupled with a highly customizable turn order via the speed stat, makes strategizing actually fun. and an easy to use automated scripting of ability use/behaviors/hierarchies tailored to specific tasks takes all the chore out of grinding.

ive just not seen a proper turn based rpg yet that can ride the balance between making its combat interesting without making normal battles superfluous or a chore.

Amazing game. But that's only published by SE. It was PlatinumGames that made the combat.

For me it just felt like one step forward and two steps back. Like the combat feels more polished than FF15, but (spoilers just in case) we lost the weapon variety. In FF15, Noctis gained access to new weapons as the story progressed. And the different weapon types changed how he fought in battles.

But in FF16, Clive (spoilers) has his single sword combo for the entire game. And it really felt like a missed opportunity because he absorbs the powers from other Eikons. I was hoping gaining those new powers would be an entirely different combat style for each, instead of just a new element and a few skills to hotkey. And the problem of simplistic combat is only amplified by how long bosses and mini bosses take to fight.
