People are arguing One Punch Man isn't a joke now?

Jesus...

People always have, it's ridiculous. It's usually people who like to do vs battles and put Saitama up against people and expect Saitama to lose.

He's never going to lose though, the most recent arc in the manga even made this just so clear. The stronger Garou got (and he was getting stronger constantly and exponentially at the end) Saitama was always getting stronger at pretty much the same rate, always remaining superior then once the fight was over and Saitama punched through time and knocked out past Garou (thus winning in one punch in a meta way) Saitama just kinda forgot about it and is back to his usual level of power.

He'll always be as strong as he needs to be to defeat his opponents, it's the whole damn joke. It doesn't matter who you throw him up against, he'll be stronger even if it makes no sense.

Actually explaining the power stops it from being a joke and narratively he's weaker than God if he took that long to beat someone who merely had a small bit of his power and that God killed instantly.
Also Garou was not getting stronger exponentially. He was just copying Saitama's power. Saitama is the one that was growing stronger exponentially to the point Garou copying him still means Garou will be left in the dust.

I would've thought something with that title about a character who can one shot anything would obviously be a fucking parody. But apparently people's IQs halve when talking crossovers and death battles.
Yeah, and I think its fairly clear early on there are elements of both gag/satire and some serious introspection from the character. But there is clearly a heavy element of satire/parody and it doesnt shy away or try to hide it

Saitama wasn't up against god though and thus his power didn't need to be powerful enough to overcome them. When he faces them then you'll find he'll be more than strong enough because that's the joke.

I get it, some of you will never accept this and that's fine. Just don't be surprised when this is exactly how it plays out for the rest of the manga just like it has for all the manga before now.

im hoping some universe busting+++ stuff happens whenever he faces god

so far in the manga Saitama has pretty nice visual feats that are better than the visual feats of many characters that are wanked to universal level (based on some vague statements or whatever). Like Dante/Kratos lol...

At this point this can apply to literally any shonen protagonist so Saitama isn't special in that regard. Goku will also pull out whatever BS powerup he needs to in order to triumph over whatever OP villain he's facing. Luffy, Deku, whatever. Saitama already lost to Garou narratively when he failed to stop him from killing everyone he knew, when he admits to Garou that he's a terrible hero, when he needs Garou to teach him how to time travel to reverse the deaths he failed to prevent. Yeah, Saitama will beat God but it's definitely going to have some serious shonen drama and power scaling behind it rather than it just being some looney tunes gag about how all his opponents simply never having remotely been at his level like with Boros and WC Garou.

Like I said, the people who try to take Saitama seriously are people who like to do vs topics because they need Saitama to not be a gag character because as long as he's a gag he cannot seriously be used in a vs topic except against other gag characters like off-screen Squirrel Girl. You're just proving my whole point.

The creators themselves are now treating him as serious as any other shonen protag with in-universe power scaling graph. At this point you're really just acting like a Saitama fanboy in denial that the meme they built up is no longer valid anymore.

The writers of DB Super are making Goku act like a complete idiot because they have no understanding of the source material. The creators of OPM making a gimmick character serious all of a sudden is no different.

I don't watch DB so whether that's true or not I don't know. But Saitama is definitely not the only character changed in the manga. Almost every major character in the manga got watered down into being the same exact mold of wholesome tsundere instead of the distinctly flawed characters they were in the WC.

Uh huh, I'm a fanboy for calling a gag character a gag character, that makes sense. I suppose I'm also a fanboy of Squirrel Girl, I must be because my opinion of her is the same as Saitama. Absolutely ridiculous.

He's a joke character. Don't take him seriously. Seriously, he punched through time to defeat Garou in a single punch, he's a joke and the writer is not taking him seriously.

Yes, you're a fanboy for being in denial that a character the writers have been increasingly taking seriously and have said themselves is a regular endgame shonen protag being put at the beginning of the series is still a gag character because you're clinging to old memes. As far as I'm aware Squirrel Girl's offscreen gag hasn't been compromised compared to Saitama's not taking any fight seriously gag. He's about a joke character as any other shonen protag. His punching through time was built up and had its mechanics explained in-universe and taught to him in a serious sequence by Garou. You are in denial.

Goku was always an idiot
Americanised DBZ portrays him much more heroic than he should have.

He's a goofball most of the time, but serious when it needs to.

You're trying to attribute comedy where there is none. We have it straight from the creator what Saitama's deal is and it's not "a joke" and the series is not a joke either. There's no need to make up things about the series when we are told explicitly what it is.

Guess that helps explain why I completely lost interest in the anime about midway through S2.

For me personally, it's one of the worst adaptations of something I've ever seen. The fight in the webcomic was fucking perfection, so that being adapted and expanded was something I was really hyped for years over. The fact that the original author is involved with it is fucking mind boggling. It literally feels like someone who didn't understand the point of the manga's fight adapted it. The manga returns to more of a normal expanded adaptation after that arc.

Do we give people a pass when they make something, everyone laughs at it, and they claim uh, y-yeah, it was meant to be a parody all along? Writers lose sight of their vision all the time. Sometimes they admit it, other times they double down.

Contrary to popular (fanboy) belief, a creator can forget things and misunderstand their own work. Dragonball Super has been one extended example of this.
Can you prove thats what happened?

Toriyama openly admits that he forgets stuff and writes off the top of his head.
