Really makes you think what it means for a show to be successful in the streaming era

Netflix is so quick to pull the trigger it's ridiculous.

That's the problem when you allow algorithm's to choose what to keep and cancel.

Plenty of shows and films take time to cultivate an audience.

I don't get how something can be in the top 10 of your service and still not be successful. Just lower the budget.

It's possible that the bar was low at the time of it's debut. That's the only possibility.

for some reason when streaming original shows became a thing, I thought it meant no shows would ever get canceled before they finished. I thought the whole ratings thing wouldn't be a factor and every story would have its chance to be completed

But I swear netflix sometimes seems to cancel stuff more often than network tv

Netflix will cancel literally anything the second it looks like it wont be the next massive thing. Hell, most streaming services will at this point.

So many great shows just need a little bit longer to hit their stride, and now a lot of modern ones are just cancelled

This is a reason why I'm concerned for WWE shows on Netflix exclusively.

I really enjoyed that one. But I'm atleast happy it was set up pretty much as a standalone. I honestly thought it was just a miniseries. Still fuck Netflix.

Trying is the first step towards failure, so just dont give it a shot and you cant dissapoint.

We were all so happy when streaming services seemed to behave differently than cable, but it feels like we're not long from a future where no show will end organically. It will either end after 1-2 seasons, or be super popular and get milked to shit.

This is the likely answer. It's likely that it was top 10 at a time when views in general were lower than average. I'd say the deciding factor was based on how much viewership dropped by the end of the series, unfortunately.

Yeah they started being very "cancel trigger happy" the moment Stranger Things was a massive hit. All of a sudden a lot of shows started seeing the axe because Netflix found a new "algorithm" or way of measuring "success" for their shows. Which means even really good shows will die out.
