February 29, baby.

Note to mods: I was born in 1984, so I'll be 40 years-old. 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and tomorrow makes ten birthdays.

Note to people that think leap years are skipped on every century: That's mostly true, but the leap day is still included in centuries divisible by 400 (plus an additional caveat that won't apply in my lifetime), so 2000 was a leap year even though 1900 wasn't and 2100 won't be.

Note to the most commonly asked question about when I celebrate the other 3 out of 4 years: I celebrate otherwise on February 28th, because screw March.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

365 x 4 + 1 = 1461

1 out of 1461 is 0.07%

(Not taking into account that there are more births during certain times of the year, like 9 months after Valentines Day)

Essentially 1 in 1461 for people alive now, assuming an even spread of when people are born, and assuming that across 8 billion people then there are approximately 5,475,000 of us.

I learned about leap year when I was a kid from that paradox song in Pirates of Penzance, where the 21 year old discovers he is really only 5. That made a big impression on young Westernwolf for some reason.

Happy Birthday TC!

Did you know the rule is that if the year is divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400, leap year is skipped?

For example, the year 1900 which is divisible by 100 but not by 400 was skipped, but the year 2000 was not. The next time we will skip a leap year will be in 2100.

Does the skipping mechanism continue? For example, if the year is divisible by 10,000, do you skip it then? Do you include it if it is divisible by 40,000?

I only say that because a really old topic archived was him announcing a birthday but a leap year may have not been involved. Well carry on.

Anyway, happy birthday.

Yep, people get hard bans for making super obvious jokes about being under the ToS age... like really silly shit, like one guy got banned from saying they were one year old as a totally sarcastic response to someone... like shit that is clearly satire and not even humanly possible for a one year old infant to fucking type a post!

But mods be like: "Well I guess it's a actual one year old infant that's been posting here since... 2009 ...seems impossible huh... well whatever, screw common sense and context! Rules are rules unless you're my friend....BAN!"

I've never looked too into it, but I'm aware that there are get-togethers in several larger cities and the likes, both on leap day and on other days.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the insta-bans were just statements of age. As mentioned, I've brought up my birthday every four years since at least 2012 and maybe 2008 and 2004, and never got into mod problems over it.

And thanks, all. Woo to another day of traveling on a jet.

Oh, and happy birthday obviously

In the distant future, depending on how you measure the length of the year and the vacillation of equinoxes, our current system has a drift rate of either 1 day in 3000ish years or 1 day in 7700ish years, meaning in a few thousand years an additional divisible by 400 leap year might be skipped. Not currently baked into the system, though.
