This far exceeds the typical price of a footlong sandwich at Subway, which tends to cost between $6.50 and $12.

When inflation is so bad, this needed to be clarified.

But this is why you don't use debit cards. Zero advantages over a credit card.

Lanigan said that had Bishop used a credit card instead of a debit card at the counter, she would have been better protected.

Yeah, this is why I charge everything. I know why people don't (or can't) but still.

With everything automated nowadays I don't even know how this mess up would have happened though. Unless she gave a tip?

Looks like Subway already beat Wendys to the dynamic pricing model.

I guess it was a pricing error. That sandwich cost 1010 when it probably meant to cost 10.10

yeah but everything is on a kiosk system controlled by corporate (least i would think so). <_< Obviously managers have the ability to go in and offer discounts/pricing changes for reasons, but still

Why? On fucking food? Fast food? You use debit because you can pay for it.

Not everyone has a credit card.

I mean, why? cause you (usually) get points/cash back on credit cards and that is still (exceedingly) rare on debit cards.

Even if you only spend $1200 a year on fast food, that's anywhere from $12-$60 (1-5% cash/points back) you wouldn't have earned on debit.

CC provide many consumer protections you don't get if you pay with cash/debit. reversing a CC charge you haven't paid for is a LOT easier than getting a refund

Good for you.

Again not everyone has a credit card or would rather just use the money they have in their account to pay for it.

It's not like she was expecting to have over a grand stolen from her. She had enough to afford the food she was getting and got robbed.

Depends on the bank.

A credit card would cost more to use.

Also, at least here in Portugal, you have 10 days to cancel any payment made with a debit card.

I mentioned this in the other topic about it, but Subway's online ordering actually lists an add-on option for literally $1,000.00 So I have to wonder if that is how the order was placed. What should be a $1.00 add-on is wildly ridiculous instead.

Which is where the additional credit card protections (in the US) would come in.

Look, there are (good) reasons to not use a credit card (all the time). Acting like it wouldn't have been better or there are no reasons to use one over a debit card is being willfully ignorant

I get what he's saying.

Let's assume you have the money to cover whatever you're buying with your debit card.

You put it on a credit card instead that gives you reward points or cash back bonuses or whatever, and then you instantly use the account attached to your debit card to pay it off.

I paid for a Disney vacation about 8 years ago doing that. Paying things like my electric and phone bill with a Disney credit card, and then instantly paying it off a minute later with the money in my debit card account.

But acting like "It wouldn't have happened if she used a credit card! So it's her fault they stole a grand from her and it's her fault subway, the credit card company, the bank wouldn't return her money, it's her fault she had to struggle not being able to eat. All because she didn't use a credit card."

Again, not everyone has a credit card or uses one. Nor did she expect a $22 meal to be a grand.

All we're saying is, is that if she had used a credit card this would have been a simple chargeback and not a months-long process to get her (fraudulently) charged money back. It would have been a simple "haha silly subway" instead of a (tragic) story involving her struggling to make ends meet over Subway's fuck up

I know, I'm not trying to start anything, I understand her struggles, a grand is a lot of food taken from your family.

They manually put the numbers in? I get that was a thing when there wasn't a PoS system (that's how it was at Carl's Jr back then anyways), but now you just touch the picture and it applies the price for ya. Maybe subway does it differently, but I can only think of rare occasions they would manually input the price.

Anyways I'm not trying to start anything. Nowadays a grand is a lot. And if you've never had to fight the bank or card company for your money back maybe you don't understand what it's like. My wife uses her credit card for the same thing, buys on credit and pays on debit right away.

No one is blaming her for getting mischarged, all everyone was pointing out was there would have been added protections if she had used a credit card instead, which is undeniable.
