She was about to make her escape with Newt in the Queen's egg chamber. Queen told the other aliens to back off and Ripley was heading towards the door. Then, even though the site was set to nuke at any minute, she decided to piss off the queen by burning and shooting shit. Like, in case the nuclear blast wasn't enough?
Of course the queen wanted to kick her ass at that point and got on her ship when she would have been happy laying eggs until the site blew up. --- This is where cool people write stuff. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Also, considering just how much the Aliens had ruined Ripley's life, it's pretty understandable that she'd want some direct payback if given the opportunity.
