I'd say that would be more infamous than iconic.
Concord was a symbol of luxury and national pride. Flying on it used to be an ambition for people. No one cared about the commercial aspect.

It's still the only supersonic airliner. All these decades later

In it's day absolutely, but the image most people in the modern day think of when they think of the Concorde is fire shooting out the back of Air France Flight 4590.

Unfortunately, yes.

It was probably the safest plane around during its lifespan. That was the only fatal accident in 25 years of flight, and that was due to runway debris rather than any fault in the aircraft.

Spitfire.

Outdated weird yoke controls. Designed in the late 30s so that despite being constantly upgraded it eventually reached a speed and performance plateau below planes developed later like the Tempest and Mustang. Toothless guns until the later versions, and early on the Hurricane was the superior gun platform. Narrow landing gear that made it difficult to land and caused all sorts of problems when it was landed on carriers as the Seafire.

Everyone is saying military aircraft, but my thinking was that the average person is probably going to be more familiar with something like the 747.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Agreed. For average person it's probably the Boeing 747, Cessna 172 and the Space Shuttle. Maybe the B-2 Stealth Bomber too. Show them a photo of Spitfire or Messerschmitt Bf 109 and they'd probably ask "umm something from WW2?"

I'm just not sure how many "false positives" you will get if talking about the 747.

I think many people will call a passenger plane "a Boeing" (with the 747 the most common one) and any small plane will be called "that's a Cessna".

Most common passenger plane is Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 iirc although I don't know if regular people can tell 737 from 747 or not. They might realize that 737 is a little too small to be called 'jumbo jet'. Or they might call all passenger planes 'Boeing' just like you said :)

To me, the most distinctive feature of the 747 has always been the hump where the cockpit and the upper deck are.

It's a large part of the reason 747s were used on almost every ocean crossing flight. At the time it was designed jet engines still had significant reliability problems so a two-engine plane was limited to staying within a certain distance (one hour flight time but don't quote me on that) of an airport in case an engine died. Two engine planes crossing the Atlantic had to go up and over across Iceland but the four engine 747 could cross direct due to the added engine redundancy. That regulation has long since been retired as jet engines improved.

Thats the ETOPS (Extended Range Operational Performance Standards) certification. Jet engines are more reliable than piston driven engines. So you can fly with less engines without needing an alternate airport within a certain time range if one should fail.

Is it that uncommon? The B-2 was the first modern military plane that I learned about.

The GAU-8 Avenger is HUGE.

That's the Gun uninstalled parked right next to a VW Bug for scale.

GE tried selling a gimped version of the GAU-8, known as the GPU-5 Gunpod.
It was only 4 barrels and mountable in a pod form

https://www.twz.com/18569/ge-really-wants-to-sell-you-a-30mm-cannon-pod-in-this-classic-marketing-reel
The reality is that the system was so ill-suited to the aircraft that just firing the gun multiple times would tweak the pylon it is attached to and thus it would become skewed far off zero. Not to mention that in comparison to the low and slower flying A-10, in actual combat the F-16's high speed made it hard to get a proper sight picture to aim during long strafing runs. Apparently maintainers and pilots had warned that the gun was ill-suited for the light fighter long before the deployment, but their mission was to try and make it work.
After the first few mission evolutions during the opening of Desert Storm, it was clear that the GPU-5 was an area suppression weapon at best, and the 174th unbolted the heavy gun pods from their jet's and went back to using cluster and general purpose bombs on targets. A practice they would continue to practice as they patrolled their kill boxes throughout the war."
