I dunno anything about Splatoon but I know the DLC campaign is highly regarded and want to play before I get into Splatoon 3.

The story mode in the base game is barely even a game. It's like the obligatory "throw in the bare minimum 1P content to satisfy demands because people don't like buying multiplayer-only games even if that's the only mode that they ever play". Octo Expansion is an actual game.
