I had the original Final Fantasy addition.
It's probably one of the things my dad threw out on me.
Kinda wish he hadn't.

my dad was the opposite.

he didn't care about video games or video game magazines, but when we got older and started throwing some away, he was like, "you don't care about your history"

Sure, it was shameless advertising. But it was shameless advertising that came with a map of Ninja Gaiden.

Ya, he could be a little brutal about that.
Which is odd as we were both collectors.
But who would have known that franchise would blow up so big?

I do however still have my, 1/4 first copy of the Sonic Comic in mint condition though.

Those were the day. Nintendo power did a special series of mini issues for pokemon called pokemon power. Those were what got me into pokemon. If it weren't for that I might have never gotten interested.

TBH, They would make games needlessly hard, just to sell guides.
You can't tell me anyone knew which bush to burn in Zelda without some sort of cheat.

Once you learned you could burn bushes, you burned every bush.

Nah. Bush placements gave you ideas where to try.

Most people just cheated for that one.
There were other examples of such thing, but they are not top of mind.

I mean yes, there are examples of very cryptic things in games.

LoZ wasn't that difficult. It was usually one thing per screen and fairly easy to figure out if it was bomb, burn, or push. A few were trial and error but most were just a few choices at most.

Wasn't there a second play-through? I might be remembering that.

Fair point. Second quest was a lot more opaque at times. New mechanics that certainly weren't explained fully, such as pushing through walls or the sword taking bubbles.

Castlevania 2 is a good example. That had stuff like you have to equip this certain crystal and kneel in front of this certain cliff then a whirlwind will take you to the mansion. And the clues that were supposed to help you figure out that stuff got lost in the localization.

I dont have the maps memorized for the Zelda dungeons so always trial and error when bombing walls. Finding the red ring and silver arrows took me longer than normal on the last playthrough. I also remember at recess sharing where the 1 ups were in Mario 1

Yep. Apparently that wasn't even a localization thing. The townspeople lied to you in the Japanese version as well.

Wonder if my brother still has his stack of old Nintendo Powers from the late 90s to early 2000s

It was the era when the spine had images of game characters that would show once you stacked them up.

Some of those fan letters are hilarious.

I was subscribed to Nintendo Power from when it was Nintendo Fun Club News, until the game coverage turned its focus to the SNES (I'd gone to Genesis). I had a bunch of the map, strategy, and cheat/code books. I even got the original Dragon Warrior for NES free for renewing my subscription one year. It was exciting, finally having it show up in the mail.

I still have an issue of the Fun Club kicking around somewhere.... I think I got 3 issues before it switched to NP..... I think the one I have still is the final issue of the Fun Club.

The cover that sticks in my memory from that time was the one I got while I was in the hospital - I remember it had a hockey player seated in front of the TV.

I still have my copies, I have issue 1 through the mid 50s, a ton of N64 era, and then from Wii to the end. In total I have about 150 issues, someday I'd like to track down every issue.

The time they sent out 4 strategy guides with a subscription was neat. They had full guides for SMB3, Final Fantasy, Ninja Gaiden 2, and a guide for 4-player games.
