I am thinking about trading in for a better phone. But I am worried about Identity theft.

you can back it up to flash drive or PC too right? Is there any cloud storage options that are free?

Factory reset is fine, the people who have not only the know how but the equipment to get that data off your phone after a factory reset do not care about you, you're a nobody.

Deleting something doesn't actually delete it. All it does is tell the OS that it's ok to write stuff to that location. So if a location hasn't been overwritten since the delete, it is likely still there and recoverable. The more time passes (and the more stuff is saved) reduces the chance that data can be recovered.

So if you wanted to be thorough, you factory reset, create throwaway accounts, download/copy a bunch of bulk stuff to fill out the storage, erase, repeat, erase, repeat, right?

From my understanding, its way more difficult to recover deleted data from solid state drive memory compared to old magnetic drives

So i heard like physical destruction is the only fool proof 100 perc. method though

Yes and no, it's takes different equipment. The problem though is you need to write the sectors over multiple times to really eliminate it and doing that on an SSD actually reduces the lifespan of the device.

identity/data mostly only happens when it's easy/valuable. Generally a full factory reset will turn off the average thief/hacker.

Yes and no.

HDDs have a lot of moving parts that are prone to failure. Even though the HDD plate will outlive an SSD it's quite common for a decent SSD to outlive HDDs.

isn't the total number of avg. writes for ssds much less than hdds?

Thanks for the advice so the reset doesn't fully work if someone really really wants the data. I don't think am that important nor am I rich enough for someone to really go out their way. If someone steals my life...Congratulations you now have student loan debt. So I guess I will just reset it like 10 times and feel safe. I have anxiety so things worry me. But this sounds good.

It's not about the writes with an HDD it's about all it taking is one small part of the HDD to fail and the HDD is potentially useless. Also if you drop an SSD it's almost certainly fine but if you drop an HDD it's quite probably fucked.

A lot more is involved in an HDD failure than just writes.
