I say this as a short guy myself (5'7) i've had so many short guys get in my face, try to micro manage me and act aggressive when they didn't need to be. Napolean complex is a real thing.

As short people it's best to develop good people skills and work harder so people respect you more and take you seriously than try to be some aggressive asshat for no good reason. Not to sound sexist but I notice this a lot with women too not just short men. They act overly bossy/aggressive to get people to do what they want.

I saw a short guy last week who had his truck jacked up 16-18" above the wheels.

It was hilarious, he'd have to stand on his toes just to look in the window.

Nobody is claiming that all short people are aggressive. However, its not uncommon to meet somebody who is clearly insecure about their height and handles it through aggression. Yes, its about them being a dick who happens to be short rather than being short making them a dick, but it definitely happens.

No I dont have data, in the same way that I dont feel the need to prove that the sky is blue. Its evident in the world around you.

Its also not an outlandish claim. The idea that it absolutely never happens is much more extreme.

Thats a poor comparison, unless you mean that somebody was claiming that some female drivers are inept because they have encountered some, in which case, the anecdote is completely valid.

Of course, its fairly meaningless because the amount of female drivers would suggest that some of them are poor drivers.

Perhaps. But even then maybe the guy is just bitter about how he's actually been treated by others rather than insecure about his height on a fundamental level.

Technically no but effectively yes. Napoleon was slightly above average height but because he didn't wear heeled boots, while most of the elite men of his era did, he still often appeared shorter than his peers.

Though the fact that Napoleon chose not to wear the boots implies that he was the opposite of insecure about his height, yeah. >_>

Generalisations arent fair game. If somebody claimed all or even most short men are more aggressive, thats not on. That doesnt mean that we cant acknowledge that some short men are aggressive to mask feelings of insecurity linked to their height.

I guess intention matters a lot.

If, for example, you argued that some black people are criminals, that's undeniably true. However, people might question your motives for making such an observation, as racists in the past have tried to argue that black people are naturally more predisposed to criminality.

Could you be making a benign observation? Yes. Are people likely to give you the benefit of the doubt? No.

And it's not just bad personality, but trying to feign the heart of gold. Or yeah scapegoating shortness or hobbies as the problem even if one has a horrid personality.

Hence that fake geek girl gamer claim. Easier to pretend that your hobby is off-putting than being unfriendly.

That also entails not enabling sexual predators via victim blaming.

Yeah and while I can't disagree that us white, hetero guys can be victims of discrimination, it feels like the fact is used to claim that other groups are no longer victim to such at all or a little.

Research

In 2007, a study by the University of Central Lancashire concluded that the Napoleon complex is a myth, described in terms of the theory that shorter men are more aggressive to dominate those who are taller than they are. The study discovered that short men were less likely to lose their temper than men of average height. The experiment involved subjects dueling each other with sticks, with one subject deliberately rapping the other's knuckles. Heart monitors revealed that the taller men were more likely to lose their tempers and hit back. University of Central Lancashire lecturer Mike Eslea commented that "when people see a short man being aggressive, they are likely to think it is due to his size, simply because that attribute is obvious and grabs their attention".[10]
The Wessex Growth Study is a community-based longitudinal study conducted in the UK that monitored the psychological development of children from school entry to adulthood. The study was controlled for potential effects of gender and socioeconomic status, and found that "no significant differences in personality functioning or aspects of daily living were found which could be attributable to height";[11] this functioning included generalizations associated with the Napoleon complex, such as risk-taking behaviours.[12]

No surprise here.

Black and angry.
Short and angry.
Gay and angry.

When others are angry, it's because they're angry. When these individuals are angry, it's because of what they are.

Disclaimer: I don't compare "short discrimination" to discrimination faced by LGBTQ individuals or members of underrepresented ethnic groups. That'd be a total "My classmates didn't like me because I had red hair" play. But there is a small overlap in that it is treated as cause-and-effect when it comes to being angry. You're angry because you're (you).

And the argument is the short element has no relationship to the overly aggressive element, but you're saying that isn't the case, based on you seeing an overly aggressive short man and attributing his aggression to his shortness.

Is the issue here overly aggressive behavior, or overly aggressive behavior from short dudes? Is overly aggressive behavior not annoying when it comes from someone who isn't a short man?

It just comes across very differently. Theres a marked difference in the behaviour of a psychopath and somebody who is being aggressive to compensate for something, as their aggression never really rings true.

If you cant see it, you cant see it. Youre not going to convince me it doesnt happen though.
