Ultimecia basically chooses your party for you and completely messes up your junctions setup, so if you went in with squall Zell and quistis, she might change it to selphie squall and rinoa.

You can still win and put her in her place, but its such an unnecessary dumb example of trying to make the fight difficult by going "oh, you don't know who I'll choose to be in your party" and I'm not gonna junction all 6 of my party members as a just in case when I can only max Stat 3 of them at a time.

They got replaced if you let them die for long, regardless of who killed them.
Of course the fastest way is to kill them yourself

Just junction three characters and if the wrong ones show up, fight as normal until they die and then they'll be replaced by the right characters if you don't revive them.

Yeah it's dumb though. If there were enough GFs in the game to junction at least most stats for each character, it would make more sense. But whatever, the replacement gimmick works.

There is enough, tho. You can learn junction abilities with item too.

Really? I only completed the game once so I'm not super familiar with it. I just remember finding all the GFs and having trouble junctioning all the stats for three characters, let alone six.

Other than the special stats like dodge, accuracy, and luck you should have enough GF for 3 characters on disc 1. 3rd Spirit Junction comes with Leviathan, which is disc 2

Yes, it is trivially easy to have a full team of six built characters by the time you are facing the final boss. As mentioned, by the end of the first disc you are already complete for a single team and that's ignoring the fact that you can pretty easily get a hold of items that let you add the ability to junction to any GF that you want. While I can't say that gearing out everyone is particularly that great of an idea, it is not hard at all to do so beyond a couple of very specific spell junctions (Ultima in particular is kind of a pain if you don't know the cheeky ways to get it).

Do you ever do the trick where you keep at low health and then limit break her over and over, with the R1 trigger to boot?

So the dying thing does work... but it takes too long for them to be "sucked back into the void" and I'd be too busy trying to defend and heal from ulty's assault and barrage of attacks.

Still, at least it's there if I need it.

well depends on your definition of secret. If your gf page is not full yet you should look around on the map. you should be able to reach all of the map even on disc 4, though cities are closed. And there is a timer at one part in the castle, that's for the hardest boss.

The funny thing about FF8 being so easy is that one boss Adel that seems specifically designed to screw over those that really do follow the path of least resistance (and greatest tedium) by blasting everything with summoned attacks.

Loooool that's literally how I played the game all those decades ago when I couldn't make heads or tails of the battle system, the junction system, or the card battles. Just summoning guardian forces over and over every battle. Then you add in the damn level scaling hoo boy. Which completely screwed me over by disc 3 with the sudden uptick in difficulty after the "incident".

It shouldn't have needed a gamefaqs guide 20 years after the game's release to be able to beat the game, but being able to break said game does make up for it a teensy bit.

I got up until the middle of Disc 2 before realizing summoning Shiva over and over isn't working much anymore and looked up how to properly junction. Which is also about the time I started enjoying the game, hah

I got to the (disc 3?) fight against Raijin and Fujin just summoning over and over the whole game. It was agonizingly slow and tedious, but if I didn't have a GF tanking hits, I'd get murdered by everything immediately. When even GFs couldn't take it anymore, I gave up. Later I read that you're better off junctioning as much as possible and never leveling and started again and it was indeed a much more enjoyable experience. Never bothered learning the card game, but it didn't take too long to draw grind and refine cards from enemies, which doesn't break the game but does make it playable.

What you really learn when you get into junctioning is that ff 8 is actually a card game wrapped around a jrpg. You need to be able to win and game the system so that just the regular rules appear and not the BS rules; the AI already cheats you don't want to give them any more advantage

The cards are ridiculous and make the game trivial, you can get a ton of heros from one of them. Just make yourself invincible.

Given that a legitimate strategy for the game is to just keep Squall dead the entire time, FF8 definitely unintentionally flirts with some pretty dark timelines.

To keep him from leveling while leveling up your GFs and also collecting magic and items. Then when you get to endgame the mobs are his level while he's severely OP.
