I've been doing it ever since that story of the woman whose vacuum (those little ones that move on their own) uploaded a video of her in the bathroom to Facebook?

she didn't know until it was on Facebook.

Not my phone, but one of the first things I did when I got my laptop was put black tape over its camera. Plus, with the way the laptop is oriented now, it's useless as a webcam, anyway.

My PC camera is external, so I usually keep it unplugged.

This is why I don't allow any indoor cameras of any kind into my house. As for front cameras, just deny permissions for every app except the camera itself.

For the computer I just turn the thing off with the camera and microphone privacy settings.

Not like there is anything I do that would be iffy, even if Microsoft or others had backdoor spies anyway for it.

It really is kinda silly when people just cover it up. I mean really. The microphone is the biggest issue if you are worried about anything.

it's not even just wanting to hide private stuff, but I don't like the idea of others being able to look through my camera and seeing my dumb face

Robot vacuum cleaners are a god send if you are old or disabled.

Regarding cell and web cams, yeah, I'm careful with what I have because I find it unnerving. My peace of mind is valuable, and I enjoy solitude and privacy.

the roomba incident was human sabotage. a contractor for irobot (maker of the unit) was in charge of handling certain data, including the photos that the R&D unit took. Some "rogue employees" (perverts) saw the pic of her on the toilet and manually spread it on SocMed.

Every time I've seen a professional IT/security person comment on it, they've said to cover your laptop camera. So yeah, I tape something over mine.

I don't do it for my phone, though.

my laptop is covered with a piece of electrical tape. it's mostly out of habit because I was a l33t h4ck3r back in the day and thought it was edgy and cool.

i don't put tape on my desktop web cam because i only plug it in when i'm gonna use it which is very rarely.

Naw, you should take all reasonable steps to make yourself feel safe and comfortable, and try to encourage others to do the same without being weird. I feel that the pendulum will eventually swing the other way in the battle between privacy and convenience and "security".

I got my laptop in 2020. It didn't come with the slider cover for the webcam but I bought one for a few bucks that just sticks on.

edit: Remembered the year wrong.

Mine has a sliding cover, which is kept closed unless I'm using the camera. Otherwise, I'd use tape.

A couple years back, my email started receiving threats to send bitcoin to some virtual wallet or they'd leak my files to my contact list. The next day, I got an email saying that someone in Japan had logged into my Microsoft account (probably from a laptop I haven't used in years). Those two were WAAAY too close together, so I deleted my email account, made a new one on a different provider, and covered my tablet camera lens with tape.

Nobody ever told me about receiving any private files, so the extortionist was likely bluffing, but I doubt the Japan login was a coincidence.

With the random people logging into your Microsoft account thing, I get that as well despite my password being a random string of characters 50 long and I reset it like 3 times last year. What I think is happening is people are trying to log in on devices, where it doesnt prompt for a password and instead prompts just for MFA (you can see this when setting up a new laptop) and then hoping people do the MFA in braindead mode

so I think the Japan hacker was a coincidence
