I like video games. A lot.

But I don't assume a random person I've never met knows any random trivia I can think of about the developer of any random video game from any random year dating all the way back to 1958. Hell, I don't even know all that trivia.

But if it's sports or movies, well now, any random person on the street is going to assume any other random person on the street knows literally--and I mean LITERALLY--every stat for every player/actor on every team/movie from any year going back to 1780-something.

And if neither of those random people is me, they'll be 100% guaranteed to be right in that assumption.

I ran into this with a movie. Started watching Pirates of the Caribbean, and my friend starts reciting every line. When I act surprised, he says, "What, you haven't seen this?" Yeah, I've seen it, but not 100 times like you apparently have.

No the same holds true for gamers.

It's just that sports freaks or movie buffs are more likely to go outside to bother decent folk whereas being a hardcore gamer is strictly an indoor activity. But you see them do the same thing as sports freaks on online forums. As a casual gamer, it's pretty tiring when someone is surprised I haven't heard of their favorite obscure game.

Thats a whole lot of hyperbole.

I'm old...71...and I knit with a group of older ladies once a week. Everytime there is a "shooting" they blame video games. I'm a gamer and it annoys the heck out of me. They say the violent video games make people want to do it. Just because I play grand theft auto doesn't mean I'm gonna steal their vehicle

It is, at most, a minimum amount of hyperbole.

And it's like this because up until recently, everyone watched the same stuff all the time, unless you were a real weirdo outcast.

I dont follow sport unless Im competing in it, which I havent for a long time now. Never been a problem.

Normal people dont expect everybody they meet to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of sport or really any other topic. If you were claiming to have met a person like this, then Id suggest maybe they have some sort of social difficulty. If youre suggesting that everybody you meet is like this, its more likely to be you that has a social difficulty.

People do seem to drop random sports trivia or niche stats, but they don't really seem like they expect everyone to know it. Just trying to show off their hobby knowledge I guess.

You are speaking complete nonsense about a situation that basically never happens.

Yes, people will talk about he Super Bowl to complete strangers the day after the game. But it is also routinely the most watched event every year.

All my public-facing jobs have had me absorbing football knowledge solely via customer interaction. You need a laptop fixed, you need a lobster cut just so? Okay. Oh, x just signed with the Giants? Cool. Yeah he's great.

People who do that with movie trivia are generally considered annoying. Like, a person can catch a reference and announce it, because it made them feel some way (e.g. someone watching Nope could say cool Akira reference, didnt expect Jordan Peele to throw that in). People who just run off with random movie trivia without prompt or reaching out to praise or belittle another work thats not being viewed or discussed are usually labeled obnoxious film bros.

Good idea! I will do that Mew. Makes me angry when they throw all the bad onto the gamers. My grandkids are all gamers. Oldest one is a pharmacist. Second oldest has a masters in HR. Third oldest had a love for Pokemon and the breeding part of that and figuring out their statistics. He now has a bachelor's in actuary science working for a big pharmaceutical company determining percentages of side effects on different meds. Yuppers, me and my grandkids are a bunch of bad people because we're gamers.

Oh, and they totally don't realize my love for animal crossing and watering flowers and stuff. Everything is shooting people games to them. Had to get up and walk away the last time. One old lady said "you can't be one of them are you".

It's like pokemon. You have to recognize that there are several tiers of knowledge to a subject.

Baseline "I know what that is"

"I know about type matchups sometimes"

"I have played many games and know many basic mechanics"

"I know about EVs and IVs and how to manipulate them"

"I know the BST of all pokemon, general move pools and abilities, where to find everything, function of all items and moves"

Every topic has different tiers of knowledge like that and you shouldn't assume that others are in the same as you. It's okay to have different interest levels.

I'm a huge sports fan and I have a lot of friends that are huge sports fans and I've never once had an interaction like what you're describing.

Another point..like I said, I'm 71. A gamer. When I was a teenager/young adult back in the 60s and 70s, I was considered a hippie. And we all know about the hippies and drugs and free love. Seems like there is always going to be a lable for us no matter what we do. I've been married 49 years to someone who wasn't a hippy and doesn't game. He just laughs about it and says it's a crazy misconception.
