Don't ban tipping. Ban bullshit wages that force workers to rely on being tipped.

raise the minimum wage then
if a tipped employee doesnt receive enough tips to meet minimum wage, then the employer has to make up that difference

They do raise the minimum wage here a lot. Fast food workers be pulling in at least 15 US dollars here I think. But then everything else goes up to compensate the increase.

Or in some cases, pay goes up available hours go down.

What did being rich ever have to do with paying your employees fairly?

You pay based on the concept of labor producing excess profit, not based on what you can afford.

a lot of larger fast food chains have increased wages, yes, but that's not a state requirement
i think mcdonalds here hires at like $13 for <18 and $15 for >18
but state minimum is still $10/hr

Reminder that some services actually request a tip up front, which kinda destroys the very concept of it being to compliment good service. It's just an institution which, as people have said, is used as a crutch to "justify" poor pay.

there are tons of regulations as to what a minor can do in foodservice
cant handle knives or other potentially dangerous implements/machinery, require at least a 15 minute break every 4 hrs, can't work past certain hours etc.
why would i pay a minor the same amount i pay someone that can do twice the shit theyre legally allowed to?

Actually, I'm with you on that point. It's fucking idiotic to think a 16 year old can't handle a meat cleaver, or a machine with two buttons. That's western society for you. "Kids" are treated as idiots.

Instead use that money to tip the waitstaff, less trips the waitstaff have to make to serve you, when ordering a drink also ask for a water so you dont needlessly bother them again.

My point is that no one can really "afford to start a business" and pay employees a living wage out the gate. They have to get a loan. If you have in your business plan that you plan to play servers a living wage, good luck getting the bank to approve of that. The vast majority of restaurants fail even with paying their servers very little. Restaurant owners have to play the game, and it's not going to change without regulation.

If you want to demand a tip, it's no longer a tip but a fee. If you want to push your prices up, simply increase the menu prices by 20% and pay your staff properly.

Ultimately, if the menu states $X then don't get mad that people pay the asking price of $X. If you want $Y, charge $Y.

If your business can't meet its costs, your business is fundamentally flawed and should be re-evaluated.

If you decide to pay your workers far above the market rate, that's not a real cost of doing business. Great if you can do that, but how many restaurants pay servers a living wage? That doesn't mean they're fundamentally flawed. They're made to function within their current system, which allows and almost requires them to pay little.

No one business is going to change the culture. As I said earlier, it would need legislation. You try running a restaurant and telling people not to tip because you pay your employees well, and see how that goes.

If I go out for a meal, I don't want to be processed and out the door in an hour. Lunches and dinners are social occasions and are enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

I don't want someone filling my glass all the time either. Do it once if you must, leave the water, and I'll decide if and when to pour myself another.

The best service from my point of view is discreet and not intrusive. They are there only when needed, don't interrupt your social experience, and definitely don't give the impression they want you gone so they can seat the next customers. Any of that bullshit, and there definitely won't be a tip.

Fair point. A waiter with expertise to share is a real positive.

I'm just not fond of being constantly asked how things are, having plates cleared the moment I put down my cutlery, having conversations interrupted by someone shoving a dessert menu in my face . . . that kind of thing.
