I know we have anime historians around here. But how did women with animal ears and tails become a stable in Japanese animation. Like they have a lot of undedicated furries making this stuff. Just can't go all the way.

Full on anthro designs is heavily associated with children's cartoons in Japan. Cat girls are like the compromise to make things more "adult"
