I love that Awful Announcing is a reputable source.

I don't really have a comment on the situation except I hate that the majority of the time coaches and players are always pestered for the most generic answer anyone could come up with. Who wants to hear that?

This is very old and her explanation was solid. She even mentioned how some coaches are complete garbage people(my words not hers) and they just say something sexist, so instead of throwing them under the bus she makes up some generic lines, or gives her own insights instead of saying "He suggested I meet him in his hotel room."

I got no problem with that.

She's not talking about that. That's not sideline reporting. The players and coaches have media availability, and they are obligated to do those, and we rarely have an instant when they don't do the meeting before the game.

She's talking about during the game when you try to talk to a coach after a bad quarter/half. Or after a series that's just not clicking. Some coaches are fine with whatever. Some are not.

There is a reason not a single coach or player has come out and said "That's BS, I never said that to her!" Because she doesn't make things up for no reason or to make them look bad. You try to talk with them, if they refuse, you don't let the world know that the coach was so angry that they told you to fuck off.

We're not talking about actual news here. We're talking about random platitudes that for some reason they think we need to hear during the game. "The coach said we need to be dialed in on third downs" is not adding anything to the game for me. But that's what the producers want. This isn't real news. They aren't writing any articles.

This is a nothing story. They tried to make it a thing like 2 years ago and it amounted to nothing. They are drumming it up again. Maybe it will get some traction this time because they are trying to boost it, but it's a load of nothingness.

Well I find making up quotes and reporting them ethically problematic for a journalist.

Even small stories, even lightweight ones. You just cant do that.

Researchers cant make up data, accountants cant make up numbers.

Ive heard she is a good studio presence, Im fine if she is a host or commentator but she shouldnt be a reporter after this. Its not cancellable, its not some high conspiracy but she admits doing this and its not an ok thing to do.

But...it's not journalism, is the point I'm making. It literally isn't. They are essentially co-hosts of a TV show. I know you see the word "reporter" there and think this is real journalism, but it isn't. That's not the job.

They are. Announcers are not, they are calling things that are happening in front of them. Sideline reporters ask questions and report what they hear or see to the broadcast.

Its not hard journalism but yes you are reporting. You are asking questions and getting answers or not and reporting those to the broadcast. You cant just make things up. The things she fabricated were so benign and so droll it wasnt noticed. Still isnt right.

Announcers also "report" on the things that they talked about in their media run-throughs with the team ahead of time, other people around the league who have commented to them, etc. so why aren't they reporters to you?

Ignoring the content itself or how "important" it is, what is the actual functional difference between a sports reporter and a beat reporter? Isn't sports really just a different beat?

So you just really don't understand what their job is and how it works. If they actually reported back what was said they'd be fired. That's not what they are there for. I'm serious. You really just don't get it. Neither their actual role, nor the circumstances of these situations.
