If value for money is a consideration, yes. If not, then no, that'd be a gaming PC. Or if portability is a big factor for you, then a device like ROG Ally or Ayaneo (similar to the Deck but more powerful). Gaming laptop for those who want a compromise between portability and power.

And if portability + battery life are both very important, the Switch wins that one.

Not if you care about power lol Steam Deck OLED definitely offers the most bang for your buck for price/performance/battery life.

The only way the Switch wins vs Steam Deck is if you're stictly concerned with budget, or if you *must* have Nintendo exclusives and are too lawful good to not just do the easy thing with a Steam Deck. >_>

Imo though the Deck is decently bigger than a Switch, the Switch is already big enough that any portability solution I would use for Switch, would work for the deck as well. (Carrying case and stored in a shoulder bag.)

For that price you could just get a laptop with actual good specs.

But does the Steam Deck have docked mode for couch multiplayer like the Switch?

It actually does have a mount/stand, or you can use a USB-C to HDMI cable. It's effectively just a portable linux pc, you can do almost anything you want with it.

Good luck finding a laptop with similar specs at the same price.

Depends what you want.

If it's to play new AAA games then no.

If it's to play a large library of games portably or as an entry point to PC gaming then yeah.

Both can be true. Yes older games will play better on it but even the newest games youll still be able to play at 30fps for the most part. Chances are if youre buying a portable gaming system youre buying it for the portability, not because you want the most powerful thing out there.

Eh that's mostly because most games are still crossgen. Starfield is a mess unless you're in an interior. Alan Wake 2 is about 20fps. Returnal runs like crap. This is going to get more common as time goes on.

Do not buy a Steam Deck for new AAA games in 2023 unless it's a bonus thing and you already have a gaming PC or current gen console tbh

Keep in mind there's still something like 4 years left of this generation at a minimum.

The fact you can actually buy one makes it superior to something you cant buy

Lenovo is coming out with an equivalent as well which may be better than both the ROG and steam deck

Shit, their one looks fucking awesome. Shame they aren't gonna offer 32GB RAM as an option though.

I'm in Australia and just bought an imported Steam Deck. Still worked out way cheaper than a ROG or Lenovo and that's with the added cost of adding a 1TB SSD.

When I'm ready to upgrade I'll probably go for one that's properly released here. Hopefully the rough edges with the Windows devices are sorted out by then. Legion Go does seem pretty good.
